Something's hiding below the ice in Antarctica…. For optimistic science and tech stories, subscribe! In 1970, a team of Soviet scientists started drilling. For 28 years, they kept going… until after nearly 4,000 meters… they suddenly stopped. Because they’d found something unimaginable: Liquid water. A secret lake, down below all this ice, that had been completely sealed off from the rest of the world for 15 million years. How? And… is there something alive in there? Creatures that have been evolving separately from the rest of the planet for 15 million years? Scientists started searching for more of these secret lakes, and as they did, they realized there is way more going on under Antarctica than we ever thought. I needed to know the truth about Earth’s most remote continent. So I've come all the way to Antarctica to show you what's really happening down below this ice. And exactly what they discovered when they finally broke inside… Chapters: 00:00 What’s hiding under Antarctica? 01:50 How thick is the ice in Antarctica? 2:30 What if you dig a hole into Antarctica? 4:13 What’s inside a crevasse? 4:56 How do we know what’s under the ice? 6:24 What if you go deeper? 07: 18 How old is the ice under Antarctica? 10:33 Why are there lakes under Antarctica's ice? 13:31 How can we study the subglacial lakes? 15:19 Did we find new life under Antarctica? 16:52 Can research in Antarctica help us find aliens in space? 17:41 What don’t we know? 18:12 What's next? 18:22 :) Special thanks to Dr. Steven Chown, Rebecca Warne and all of the amazing guides from the White Desert Foundation leading Science Week . This video genuinely gave me hope for humanity. The level of science, engineering, and curiosity behind exploring Antarctica is incredible. Huge respect to the scientists and teams making discoveries like this possible — and thank you for explaining it in such an inspiring and human way
I accidentally clicked on this video and I just have to praise you for the immense amount of storytelling that was put into this video. It is so effective. It is so cool and immediately peaks my interest all because of the way you told the story. BRAVO! I’ve learned so much from this video
10:42 “It’s huge!”
This was exactly what I needed, thanks!
What a fun surprise to watch a video from a channel I've enjoyed for a while and randomly hear my music playing. Thank you for the great video and for using my music so well!
wow...nice editing, grahics, narration by cleo and kudos to the entire team !!! having a bad day..then this vdo 4 everone !!!!!
What makes Antarctica fascinating isn’t just the ice, it’s the possibility of completely isolated ecosystems evolving for millions of years under extreme conditions. Stuff like this also matters for astrobiology since hidden subsurface oceans may exist on moons like Europa and Enceladus.
There was a great docudrama series in the late 90s and 2000s that started in Egypt and culminated with the discovery of a chair in Antarctica. An Ancient chair, left by the Atlantians that powered drones! So glad you found more evidence of their existence.
Kudos to you for pronouncing it's name correctly. Most people pronounce it without it. You pronounce it correctly.
i have adhd and this type of editing, voice over, ALL OF THIS super mega yes.
I love her excitement and the videos quality makes me even more curious and eager to learn <3
You do such an incredible work Cleo. Keep it up. I watch all your videos
We're either about to uncover aliens or ancient bacteria that wipes us out. I'm fine with either.
I just bumped into this amazing video. It is my second week as a new PhD researcher in Arctic and Antarctic microbiology. I feel so blessed to now be culturing bacterial species from Antarctic ice and lake water.
your genuine curiosity is so contagious. I aspire to be like you
Show us the aliens and deep underground military bases too please. 👍🏼
cleo never stop doing what you do, you seriously heal the inner child in me whos always wanted to be a biologist, life ruined those plans for me, but im still always hopefull.
1st video i watched.. God put you on my feed. I love the way you create content!!!! love you already!
I love what you are doing your content is really enlightening and educational keep doing it
One of the top ICY Science Content out there in YT. It's too good! (PS: Editor need a raise too)
