CANbus wouldn't be such a problem for your average home mechanic if manufacturers scrapped their proprietary coding for CANbus device communication. This would allow your average OBD2 device to function and read all codes. It is infuriating to be stuck with an issue (one which is usually easily solved) and then forced to go to a dealership for 'support' or purchase a rather expensive 3rd party tool (if such a thing is even available...). If you own the damn machine, surely in a sane world, you should have the same information available as someone with a 'dealer tool' - even more so with the OBD2 port being mandated!

There's a movement in the auto enthusiast circles back to older less computerized stuff, even on our daily drivers, because of the technology saturation on our vehicles. What used to be a pleasing set of new features and comfort/convenience has now become an extremely expensive house of cards ready to collapse at the slightest hint of stress. Quantifiable problems? High cost of buy in, high cost of repair, fragility of the systems, parts unobtainium, and you can't fix it yourself at home usually. It makes our vehicles too expensive and functionally disposable.
