For those who apparently don't know much about drag cars. What the guy at the back of the car did was flip a switch to a race pack computer that records data for each run that they analyze to make any changes needed for next run. They wait until the driver lights up the first set of staging light to flip the switch on because they don't want or need data for the burnout. The only handle for the chute is always by the driver. In this case the chute cable might not have been secured properly or it could have just malfunctioned as they can do from time to time.
