Casual reminder that eggs in Japan are most of the time pasteurized to the point that it is safe to eat them raw.

Natto always looks so interesting, just from the descriptions people that like them give. I usually can’t handle too slimy textures so just looking at it, I don’t think they would be for me. However I wouldn’t knock it until I tried it. Everything else is fantastic though, just from experience !!

I know this is my Western palette talking, but sticky slimey beans plus raw egg sounds like a texture nightmare.

I would like to point out that typical and traditional are quite different. Japanese consume more bread than rice for breakfast for the past few decades. So the typical would be Japanese Shokupan bread and eating natto is like a traditional experience for many young people. I lived in Japan but many of my friends told me they only had savory breakfast like this when they are staying in traditional inns (ryokan) and their everyday breakfast is just yogurt and fruits with bread or something.

It took me a long, long time to eat natto, let alone buy it. It's an inexpensive, ready to eat, fast meal, and complete protein. Eating it for breakfast is traditional, but there's also natto spaghetti and appetizers, too.

Growing up in the US I always thought breakfast was just eggs or pancakes or something like that but I met someone who showed me that breakfast is basically anything you wanted to be lol if you’re hungry, then eat it. This looks really good actually, sticky or not!

I LOVE Natto! Haven't had the pleasure of visiting Japan (yet), but learned about it and tried it years ago; I loved it from the start, but especially with the sauce and mustard added. I've never added a raw egg, but have added soy-sesame Korean marinated, boiled egg and kimchi plenty! And love it with salmon or tuna. Now I need to go buy some as I'm out... mmm!

not sure if you do this but i always have UNSALTED stock in my freezer i make it from chicken thighs or get a rotisserie chicken remove the meat n save for later. place the skin, bones, and all the juices in the container to a pot cover with water n simmer for 3 hours strain n boom easy stock. anyway i use unsalted stock instead of water for my instant ramen.

Do note that not every japanese person likes natto, and most of those who do, are usually from the kanto region (tokyo and it's surrounding)

I noticed people are trying to make this a thing on social media but once you smell this stuff you will change your mind quick and look at other options to eat 😂
