Sometimes you have major defects and sometimes it's simply not desirable. This week we made some hard decisions for the herd. Hi there! 👋🏻 We live on a 1-acre farm right in the middle of the busy city of Phoenix, Arizona! Our names are Kevin & DaNelle, and we moved here in 2009, when our kids Ethan & Lydia were just 6 & 4 years old 🥰 Over the years we've raised goats for milk, chickens for eggs, built a fish/swim pond, planted fruit & nut trees, and grew a large garden full of veggies. We've also raised a bunch of other animals like pigs, sheep, turkeys, geese, peacocks, and more! Now that our kids are away at college, we have settled into doing what we love most -- which is raising & breeding goats ethically to improve genetics. But don't worry, we'll forever love our goofy pet goats like Luna the herd queen & Willow the stump lover. We also still love raising chickens for eggs, gardening, tending to the fruit & nut trees, and growing fish in the pond. We use the fresh goat's milk to make cheese, butter, yogurt -- and we use that + everything else we harvest on our little farm to make delicious meals. I think your decisions on your herd are coming with more confidence and knowing what you want/time you are able to put into them. You are breeding with purpose & the knowledge you have gained is helping you with your decision making. Stick with your gut!
Life is too short to be doing the wrong thing out of misplaced sympathy and/or guilt. I at least admire your resolve in your quest for the best. This is your passion, don't cut corners. The goats don't care - they just want to be somewhere nice with plenty of food.

As a long-time dog breeder, I can appreciate your concern with Jake's rear. Although he might not throw the trait, it is severe enough to remove him from the gene pool. When you watch him walk there's just something off about the entire pelvic area and all the way to his socks. It might be interesting to see xrays, but not sure that would be worth the expense. Hopefully Nessie will grow into something great to carry on with.

This video put into perspective how long ive been watching you guys, I remember Faye she was so sweet... i love having watched Danelle go from dipping her toes in goat breeding, to her full of using what shes learned to improve her genetics, and shes taught us there's more to goats then just pretty colors..
I feel bad for Willows knees, I have HEDS and my knees hyperextend all the time and one of my knees is shot .
It'll be so sad to see them go but its also best for the future of your herd!

You cull pretty ruthlessly. That's a compliment. It means you have high standards for your herd and you don't fall into the trap of pretty color syndrome or sentimental relationships with goats impacting your genetic quality... barring the Tilly line of course.

I agree with sending Jake along; choosing to breed him sounds like sunk cost fallacy. I love seeing the improvements you’re making in your goats. It’s been a fun ride to see how different pairings turn out and each new generation. FWIW, I, an internet rando, would likely make the same decision in your shoes.

I think this is why you could use a Violet buck in the future. She has a phenomenal rump!
22:52 Get rid of him. If he’s not right, there’s no point dragging it out, just to see what udder he produces. It might be a beautiful udder, but still with the same sloped rump. Don’t waste years of your life on a goats you’re not feeling it on. Go with your gut.
