After looking at houses for few months the one thing I learned is - not give up on the area you want to live in, you can always improve the house with time, but the location is a massive thing !!!
as long as you're not homeless, that's all that matters.

Totally understand how you feel, gave up my dream house to make the move to downsize/go mortgage free, but in the middle of it my husband had a heart attack and needed major heart surgery, my Dad was dying , and we had to be out in 6 weeks and there was nothing on the market. We found a place that made it worth giving up the old home (in the middle of all the health dramas) and it fell through, I was devastated!!! We bought a house that at the time I felt like we settled, it wasnt everything we wanted BUT it has become our dream home, it is everything and more now and we LOVE it. Hang in there, its such a hard emotional and unsettling time, totally understand the roller coaster xxxx

It’s been said but, as an architect I spend my life helping people create their dream forever homes, something you can’t change is the location. Always choose the location you dream of you can chip away at a house and make it your dream home. Also I’m all about the house move content and can’t wait for the renovation/ decorating content to come.
Could you put your furniture in storage and rent a tiny cottage in the area you love? That way you can minimise rent but start building your new life and wait for the right forever house to appear. Good luck x

Whilst being sustainable and trying to buy a house that doesn’t need work is a good point to make, purchasing a fixer upper also creates jobs, work and income for those local trades like builders, plumbers, electricians etc, not to mention architects and surveyors. Plus you get the house you want. If you buy from local kitchen & bathroom suppliers you’ve also created income for them. The UK economy is not doing well atm, businesses are struggling, especially small, independent ones.
