Moving Over The Garden & Officially Starting The New One

I have hydrangeas under my oak and despite the comments that it will kill the oak tree, it will not. The extra water that I have given the hydrangeas has actually improved the growth of the oak. I live in South Georgia and we are frying with very little rain so the water is helpful to the tree.

My farm is named Four Oaks because of 4 Oak trees that grew together at the base and are huge, over 80 years old and are right beside the creek ! They naturalized there so I cant imagine water being a problem, especially in your area

My annual rainfall is 66 inches and I'm surrounded by 300 year old oak trees. I think the oak can handle targeted watering to the hydrangeas.

For those of you saying your oaks tolerate summer water- It rains during the summer throughout most of the USA, and the native oaks to those regions are species that are adapted to summer water. California is very different. We have no rain during the warm parts of the year, from May to late October. Our native plants have adapted to this weather pattern. If you water when it's warm, soil fungi that normally stay dormant (along with the other native plants), wake up and start attacking the roots of our natives. Our natives have no resistance to warm season fungi like Phytophora, and will quickly succumb to root rot. Oaks seem to be especially susceptible to this. All recommendations for the three native species of oak in our area- the Valley, Blue and Live oak, are to avoid summer water at all costs. A quick google of landscaping under California native oaks will bring up many reputable sources that go into this in detail, if you want more information. Unfortunately Hydrangeas are susceptible to juglone, the allelopathic chemical secreted by black walnuts, so Robbie can't put them there either.

I live in Flirida with bunches of oaks on the property. I have hydrangeas under them as well. We can get 3-6 in of rain in one storm. I dont think the amount of water you are going to give the hydrangeas will hurt the oaks. I think the hydrangeas will suck up most of the water and the oaks will be fine!

It is lovely that you are starting your new garden. In Canada, we do grow hydrangeas around oak trees, so I hope that works in California.
