Willie, Sarah and their dogs, Jack Spaniels & Nori, left their suburban life and moved over the sea to a remote cottage on the Isle of Skye, in the Scottish Highlands. Here we grow our own food, do renovation projects, explore the stunning landscapes, take trips in our wee boat, work on our rusty but reliable Land Rover Defender, forage for wild food and generally try to live a slower, simpler pace of life. This week the Skye Lifers make the biggest change to their lives since moving to the island - buying a beautiful, but dilapidated church building to transform into their dream gallery space!! I also suggest that you do not get rid of all the pews. Take one or two of them and cut them down into small benches where your clients will have a place to sit down especially for the handicapped and the elderly. And that beautiful Lumber that is in them can be used for shelving. Keeping wood from the pews in the building also sticks with the history of the building and it could save you a lot of money in remodeling remodeling the building.
What a beautiful space. How about using the side room as your store and have your reception/desk directly opposite the door as you come in to the main part of the gallery - that way you could keep the natural light over the whole space. Alternatively you could create low level clever storage (maybe in lockable cupboards) which could double up as displays. There are so many possibilities and I don't envy you having to make the decision. Looking forward to visiting one day x
Really looking forward to seeing the progress. As a contractor, my advice is to start with making sure the structure is completely dried in. Start with the roof, make sure it's right. Then the walls, doors, and windows. Then work on the interior. It may sound obvious but I can't tell you how many times I've seen interior work ruined because they were surprised by damage from weather leaks.
Sorry to disagree with you Sarah but Willie is right to use the front near the door entrance for security reasons. If you are at the far end and become distracted it will be a greater risk - at the end of the day if someone is out to steal they will find a way - it is a question of reducing the risk factor to the best of your ability. You will have many valuable items on display particularly with Willie's jewellery.

Congratulations! Sara, I know you've probably already thought about this, but I've heard of gallerys offering painting class for tourists. Like a few hours of teaching how to paint a small landscape that can be a souvenir of their trip to Skye. Just thought I'd put it out there.

Congratulations to you both. It would become an amazing gallery. As a suggestion, don't forget to play with the height of the building. You can add like a wooden mezzanine at the back wall where you can have your storage and/or office looking over the ground level and below it, the retail desk so you double the space.
I'm so glad this is happening! I would vote for the desk by the door. I worked at an art gallery and some kids tried to sneak out with the till during a festival.
