A conspiracy theory i will die by and needs MUCH more hype is that fast fashion shops deliberately make the shopping experience terrible. Bad changing rooms, lines, uncomfortable temperatures, terrible lighting, etc so that we feel so uncomfortable we want to get the hell out the shop but have some sunk cost fallacy going that we just buy without thinking. Prove me wrong science!

This was a great video! Here are a couple of thoughts I had: One thing I did observe with clothes in France (and why it took me some time to fully get rid of Zara pants) is that ethical brands were really catering to white women (likely because they cost a lot, so they target a demographic that is more likely to be higher class). Those pants never fit over my curvier, stereotypically non-white body. I have a Masters in Atmospheric and Oceanic sciences, I worked as a climate consultant, I also organized something similar to the National Emergency Briefing in the wake of the heatwaves. I have also seen firsthand this disconnect between actions and consequences, because the dramatic consequences are already happening in countries that we do not empathize with because they are mostly populated by people of color. It also happens to be an intersection with class: rich people will likely be hit less harshly by extreme climate events at first, and they will have more safety nets in place (think of what happened with covid). The other way this discussion of cost is also a typical issue when intersecting environmental issues with class, is that poorer people can't afford to save up for more ethical options, and end up spending overtime more money than if they could have bought one really solid item that can hold up. I do think you are overestimating the class of people shopping at Zara. I agree that people who live under the poverty line do not go to Zara, but there are a lot of lower middle class people in those spaces, who are being sold the ideal of going on holidays, who are being sold the idea of becoming middle to higher class. I used to give talks and trainings to higher class people, who eat a ton of meat, who travel every other year at least by plane, and they would blame lower class people for shopping fast fashion (Zara, Shein) rather than admitting that they, statistically, are causing more harm by having a higher income. I understand that that is not what you are doing in this video, but I thought it would be good to make it more obvious, as there needs to be an intersectional approach to environmental issues with race, class, gender, otherwise we will be missing the point. Sorry about the essay haha
I will never ever wear trousers that touch the floor. I will not wear them, because they pool on toilet floors and gather dirt from streets and get wet. I wore long jeans that got a little bit wet in the winter when I was a teen, never again.
In my early 70s I can remember wearing "flares" that were so wide that you had to master walking with your legs far apart or the fabric of each leg got tangled up with the other one. Didn't stop me wearing them though!
as a 60-something person who has been through super wide leg trousers fads three times now, my guess is that the combo platter of "very long" "very wide" and "polyester satin" combine for a slip-and-fall risk
On your sustainability points, I think part of the problem is the rise of shein and temu. In comparison zara does actually seem like a sustainable option so a lot of people shopping there might feel like they are making a ‘better’ choice because at least it’s not shein
I also feel like.. if you have stood in a 25 minute line, to try on something that kiiinda fits, and the light is bad and the music is bad. Not buying anything can feel like a failure. Trust me it's a massive win to walk away.

An out-of-state colleague visiting my town last week asked me how I like where I live. I told him about how beautiful it is, but how much bad stuff is going on in the environment (invasive species with parasitic feces poisoning the farmlands, PFAs in the water wells, underwater drilling off the coast). He said, "You must be a biologist or environmentalist to know all this stuff." I shrugged, "No, I just care." I think people have this perception that being informed and being educated have to go hand in hand. You can understand without having degree-level knowledge of what's happening.
so THIS is part of a BIGGER PROBLEM. WE ARE CONSUMING SO MUCH SO THOUGHTLESSLY. HEM THEM. they can still be 'flowy' and 'long' and 'cool' but not so long. don't have a sewing machine? iron on hem tape!! don't have an iron? use a straightener! will the fabric be ok? they make hem tape for a variety of fabrics and i have used iron on hem tape for a lot of synthetics. The massive reseller/thrifting-is-garbage/thrifting-is-overpriced is because we are buying, buying, buying, buying and selling, selling, selling. LEARN TO MEND. LEARN TO MAKE THINGS WORK FOR YOU. The thing about sustainable brands is that they're not doing much to target people outside of people who already care about sustainability. I've not seen a pair of trousers from a sustainable brand for less than $80. Almost every brand I've seen is very neutral and plain. They generally do not have a great size range on either end of the sizes (a 35 inch bust should not be a xsmall). And there's the accessibility factor of having a fitting room. I don't like buying from brand I haven't tried online because I don't know how the clothes will fit or feel, especially if shopping sustainabily is new to you it can feel bad to have to return clothes because they don't fit right because it feels like a waste of fuel.

So while the temperature in England today might be significantly lower than the temperature in, for example, India, the percentage increase year-over-year is going to be higher. Hopefully that shocks some people out of complacency.
