Samsung Just Doubled Battery Energy Density With Production Solid State Samsung has unveiled a major solid-state battery breakthrough, claiming to have doubled energy density while moving the technology closer to production. If successfully commercialized at scale, the advance could deliver longer EV range, faster charging, and improved safety compared with today's lithium-ion batteries. Minor point Sam, you said that with these higher energy density batteries you would not need the big 100kWh batteries, and might get away with a smaller 70kWh battery... not correct... to travel 600miles you may need say 120 Whrs of energy, it is just that with higher energy density batteries you get the 120kWh in a smaller lighter package, maybe as small and as light as a 70Wh LFP battery. Love your work Sam.
Donut now has to add an imaginary 100Wh/kg to their imaginary battery to compete with this in the press!
500 Whr/kg will go into aircraft. Ir is a game changer for aircraft.
We all really want the 500wh/kg batteries to be public already!
So many companies are developing battery tech that eventually they will work out the bugs and production hurdles. ICE engines are doomed, it's just a matter of time.
He says that you would a “massive range” with a 70kWh battery rather than a 140 kWh battery. Not true. You need the energy to get the range. You may have a 140kWh battery that weighs the same as a 70kWh NMC but 70 won’t work.
That is dense enough to make aircraft.
500wh/kg is the point where a decent chunk of aviation could start transitioning to electric. Samsung could focus on that for a few years, as cost/kwh is a lot less of a factor for aviation and reduced battery fires are exponentially more important there. That could give them time to scale to the normal car price territory.
It’s real but it has a very high silver content which means if price of silver goes crazy, they could be too expensive for automotive use but would still be valuable in aircraft and robotics where cost is less important than energy density.
under 10 min charging. Even without home charging I only need 300 miles, and then with home charging 98% of the population are covered completely with 300 miles, Fast charging speed destroys range anxiety the most for urban/suburban
I want this for my stealth dual suspension E bike
Last year, a Chinese manufacturer demonstrated a prototype of solid state battery with energy density of 700 Wh per kilogram , but, here is the but part: till today unable to mass produce it. So until we see mass produced products, it remains the same as Toyota press release.
I settle for a light weight 800 km range EV, with Yasa in-wheel motors, solid state battery, and low drag coefficient. The 'road tax' in my country depends on the car weight.
Only the 3rd 'miracle battery breakthrough' this week? slow week!
The time for chasing expensive Li SSB for everyday cars has passed. Non-toxic Na-ion is the chemistry that actually scales for the masses. With NASICON solid-electrolyte breakthroughs emerging from premier institutions like JNCASR, banglore, pushing Na-ion past 200 Wh/kg is well within reach. Paired with battery-swapping ecosystems and second-life grid integration, Na-ion delivers safety, affordability, and complete supply-chain independence—without the massive financial and environmental mess of lithium mining and toxic waste down the road.
🔌🔌🔌During my tenure at Cummins, I recommended that the company invest in Sion Power, located in Tucson, Arizona, which manufactures a Licerion battery with a capacity of 500Wh/kg. The company proceeded with this investment. Subsequently, LG Energy also invested $75 million in Sion Power following Cummins’ involvement. These batteries are scheduled to begin production in the coming months and will be used in military drones, as they and others in the USA have backed away from vehicles. As a point of interest: who manufactured the 100 mph electric drone that flew over the Tucson Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in 2021 and was pursued for over an hour by police helicopters before proceeding to fly over 14,000 feet over Tucson's Mt. Lemmon and then disappearing? Additionally, which three significant military manufacturers are situated in South Phoenix and Tucson that use Sion Power batteries?🔌🔌🔌
Quality cutting edge commentary as usual
How come, as an Australian, you keep quoting Miles? Miles have not been used in Australia for over 50 years!
2:20 The solid-state battery will need the same capacity for long range, but it will be lighter. 70 instead of 140 kWh will not be enough. 3:38 Higher voltage?
To get 600 miles range it will need a battery that can put out the power and energy needed to go 600 miles. If the car is able to go a mile on 180WHrs then the capacity of the battery necessary for 600 miles is 108KWHr -- so not a small battery. The chemistry does NOT give you 600 miles range, the capacity does and the capacity does not care what the chemistry is! The only way a 100KWHr solid state battery is going to surpass the range of the same car with a 100KWHr battery of any other chemistry is if the solid state battery is lighter! By far the two things most interesting to me is the claim of supper fast charging which implies high power capabilities of the battery, and a 20 year lifespan -- though they need to elaborate on what they mean, legally, when the say 20 year lifespan!
