Global RAM Shortage May Continue for a Decade, Raising Fears of Costlier iPhones and Laptops The global shortage of memory chips is showing no signs of easing, and industry leaders now believe consumers could face rising prices for smartphones, laptops and other electronic devices for years to come. ADATA Chairman Simon Chen has warned that the ongoing DRAM shortage could continue for another decade, while adding that concerns about an AI investment bubble are premature and may not become relevant until around 2040 or 2050. His remarks come as artificial intelligence drives an unprecedented surge in demand for high-performance memory chips. DRAM, or Dynamic Random Access Memory, is a critical component used in devices ranging from smartphones and laptops to AI servers and data centres. According to Chen, major memory manufacturers are prioritising production for AI infrastructure, leaving less capacity for conventional consumer memory. As a result, ADATA expects DRAM contract prices to rise by 20–30% and NAND flash prices by 35–40% during the current quarter. The supply crunch is already beginning to affect the broader electronics industry. Analysts say companies that rely heavily on memory chips—including smartphone and PC makers—could eventually pass higher component costs on to consumers. Although Apple has historically secured long-term supply agreements to cushion itself from sudden price spikes, prolonged shortages could still increase manufacturing costs for future iPhones, iPads and MacBooks if market conditions remain tight. Other manufacturers with less favourable supply contracts may face even greater pricing pressure. Industry experts believe the shortage is being driven by the rapid expansion of AI data centres, which require enormous quantities of advanced memory chips. With demand continuing to outpace supply, memory manufacturers are expected to remain focused on AI-related products, keeping pressure on the consumer electronics market for years ahead.
