TB vs TiB basically

Very super nerd explanation, hopefully that made sense. 🤓

In simpler words: Storage is advertised in gigabytes while counted in gibibytes.

B
beth.cisneros 2 days, 17 hours ago

it's also partly because of system partitions which takes like 1.7gb

Also Microsoft Windows is displaying the wrong units. The 1024 thing is actually Tibibyte (TiB) and not Terabyte (TB), but Microsoft Windows shows the TiB value with "TB" as the unit.

And that weird way which is the power of 2 is the accurate way. The format they use are just for advertising and to essentially "scam" you

The OS measures it in Tebibytes (TiB), not Terabytes (TB) like the manufacturer does. Windows should actually say, to stop the confusion.

It’s not stealing guys, relax. It’s just false advertising.

The complete story is: The original naming system from the 1980's described 1kB as 1024 bytes, 1MB as 1024kB and so on. 1998 the IEC changed this convention to KibiByte for 1024 bytes and said 1 KiloByte is now 1000 Bytes. And from now on, the manufacturers build storages with the "new" naming system and saved money. Before 1998 a storage device had the correct amount of bytes, after that not any more.

Basically: The manufacturer's 2TB is 2×1000 Gigabytes, The computer divides the 2TB (2×1000GB) by 1024 Gigabytes instead of 1000 Gigabytes, So instead of seeing 2048 GB, you see 2000 GB, which is 1.95TB. I hope that helps.😊

It's because windows is dumb. It's 1.81TiB not TB, one TiB being 2^40 bytes, or 2^10 (which is 1024) GiB. Linux on the other hand will indeed show it as TiB, or GiB and not TB or GB, which is wrong on windows' part. I do NOT use Arch btw ☝️

For me it's actually insane that companies use 1000mb as 1gb and not 1024 since computers use 1024
