For those wondering the background isn't distorted, they're called schlieren lines. It's light refracting due to differences in air density from heat. Mostly likely it's so intense because we are looking through much more air than usual due to the zoom.

The reason it looks so wavy up close is because the more you zoom the more the heat waves outside are apparent if it was cold outside marques would look crystal clear in that zoom shot
