Anxiety doesn’t knock.
It slips in through the small cracks. A text left on read. A meeting on Monday. A thought at 2:17am that starts with “what if...”
And before you know it, it’s sitting on your couch, drinking your tea, rearranging the furniture in your head.
We talk about anxiety like it’s a flaw. Like it’s a bug in the system.
But the truth is, anxiety is just love and fear holding hands too tightly.
It’s the part of you that cares so much it starts rehearsing every version of tomorrow.
It’s the part of you that remembers every mistake because it’s terrified of hurting people again.
It’s the part of you that scans every room because once, a long time ago, something felt unsafe, and your body promised it would never let that happen again.
So it stays.
Vigilant. Loud. Exhausted.
*What anxiety feels like*
It feels like having 20 browser tabs open in your mind, and all of them are playing music.
It feels like your chest is a elevator that forgot which floor is ground.
It feels like trying to hold water in your hands while someone whispers, “you’re going to drop it.”
And the cruelest part?
Anxiety convinces you that if you stop worrying, something bad will happen.
As if your worry is the only thing keeping the world together.
*But here’s what I’ve learned*
Anxiety is not the enemy. It’s a messenger.
It’s your nervous system saying, “Hey. Something matters here. Pay attention.”
The goal isn’t to evict it. You can’t. It lives in you.
The goal is to teach it how to sit beside you instead of driving the car.
Breathe, and tell it: “I hear you. Thank you for trying to protect me.
We don’t have to solve everything tonight.”
Drink water. Step outside. Name 5 things you can see.
Anxiety hates the present moment. So come back to it.
Feel your feet on the floor. That is real. The “what if” is not.
*To you, right now*
If your heart is racing as you read this, you are not broken.
You are not weak. You are not “too much.”
You are a human with a tender, alert, beautiful system that learned to scan for storms.
And even in the storm, you are still here. You kept going. You opened this article. That is courage.
Anxiety will tell you that you’re behind, that you’re failing, that you’re one mistake away from everything falling apart.
Don’t believe it.
You are allowed to be a work in progress.
You are allowed to rest before the battle is won.
You are allowed to be soft in a world that demands armor.
One day you’ll realize the guest got quieter. Not because it left, but because you stopped feeding it with fear and started feeding yourself with compassion.
Until then:
Breathe in for 4. Hold for 4. Out for 6.
You’re safe in this breath. And this one. And this one.
You don’t have to be okay right now.
You just have to be here. And you are.
If anxiety ever feels unmanageable, like panic attacks, or thoughts of harming yourself, please talk to someone you trust — a friend, family member, or a mental health professional.
