Nopes. Hell NO. Starting OSS and then going into paid tiers, is not just a sell-out, its the WORST sell-out one can have. Build on contributions of the community, get LOTS of help in testing, and then on the back of it you decide to make a HUGE profit - with what is an already established market, or so Jimmy thinks. in his case, he should be ashamed, having made claims, like (and I misquote I am sure), "Mediatr will stay open source/free print Tshirts" . Stuff like, I spend lots of my time, can't maintain it, fine, do a community call and have someone pick-it up where you left. Yes I remember his reactions when Redis did the same shitty move. Enshittification all the way. Jimmy, I am telling you right now, you won't see a dime from me. As usual there are alternatives. Mr Bogart NOT COOL. 👎😤
Imo. Don't go open source all the way. Its not sustainable. Everyone should contribute to open source to build up their portfollio. And land a job that earns him money. Oh wow you made that library i use it all the time and boom. You got a job.
Duh. When you're broke, you're broke.
they should sell their expertise rather than expecting donation
no doubt, no doubt
Are the other contributors to the packages over the years also getting a cut of the new commercialisation? If not, that's not only morally wrong (to commercialise a product on the backs of unpaid oss developers) but surely there would be grounds for legal recourse for them?
what's your expectation as someone who's being windows-centric with that dotnet development? since when were windows conductive to any open source libertarian principles or anything like that...who even wants to develop for windows :D rofl i dunno why yt suggests me this crap
I didn't sell out, I bought in.
Heya Nick 🙂Seeing the title of this video makes me wonder if and when WordPress will no longer be open source. Having worked in the tech field as long as I have, nothing surprises me anymore.
If even a fraction of users of some of these libraries could be bothered to kick $5 a month to at least the top few packages they use, we wouldn't have this problem. $4000 a year is kind of nuts, but $60 is pretty reasonable.
