Before Rosa Parks, there was Pauli Murray. Born in Durham, North Carolina, Pauli Murray challenged segregation years before the modern Civil Rights Movement exploded into the national spotlight. Arrested in 1940 for refusing to give up a seat on a segregated bus, Murray later helped build the legal arguments that would destroy Jim Crow itself.
