Some hospitals are using Medicaid and reimbursement cuts to justify staffing cuts and hostile private equity takeovers. That justification collapses under the tiniest amount of scrutiny. The best way for hospitals to care for patients is to care for the people who care for patients. When are non-profit hospitals going to wake up? I work at one of those non-profit health systems. We had 3 devastating mass layoffs last year, and they just partnered with private equity "due to the Big Beautiful Bill", all while the entire C suite continues to make 7-figure salaries. The best part was when they sent all their remaining employees a letter in the mail saying how much they appreciate us by asking us to donate to them.
A system reliant on endless growth will always lead to people dying
Thank you for continuing to bang the drum on this.
I work for a FOR-PROFIT with a marshmallow bottom line.... we have 3 floors closed for lack of staffing, my whole department worked w 2 nurses (we are procedural!) And I had to "get off the clock" as soon as the last patient left - never mind that I had no time to chart, clean, charge, etc! The GREED is REAL!!! And Im sick of the disrespect!
Things really went sideways after covid. Worked for a not-for-profit health system in east TN where no healthcare provider received a bonus or raise during covid or after but all the VPs or above did (it's public record). The same ones who never touched a patient and got to work from home that whole time. I left and went to pharma where where there's still greed but they're honest about it at least. Healthcare admins are greedy and exploit those of us who that have a passion to take care of sick folks. We sacrifice our early years then continue to sacrifice our time after to ensure patients are cared for despite all the company-induced hardships. Screw all the worthless hospital admins.
SCP health? Nononononononono, the last thing we need is an SCP that is a healthcare company.
I am so sick of private equity
"Then let me know. I'll talk about it."
Those poor poor c level staff need to go on their 4th vacation this year. Feel bad for them. .......
I'm impressed how non-profits can make huge net profit. I thought by definition that shouldn't happen and also that non-profits were led by people who wanted to do good for the people with their position. Exactly what part of these non-profits is actually non-profit? Because they don't seem to spiritually or practically be non-profit.
Imaging done at my local ER is billed separately from everything else. They bill insurance. Then, instead of sending you a bill for your portion, they just send it on to collections. I have no problem paying it, I just wish they didn't jump straight past sending the bill to me. I've received a notice from collections within a month of when I went to the ER. That should be illegal. I've written my government representatives. No response from any.
This is actually scary to think about.
I used to work for a government agency that dealt with a "non-profit" children's hospital. We were responsible for ensuring that our "members" with disabilities got healthcare. The member needed primary insurance, and the state would pay the hospital for anything that the member's insurance wouldn't pay for. This "non-profit" hospital frequently billed the state more than half a million dollars for hospital stays of less than a week (and the state was the secondary insurer after the primary insurer had paid its portion!).
...wait, why do nonprofit health systems have all this money?
Private equity needs to be stopped. It just keeps ruining everything it touches and eating anything it can get its hands on.
"Listen to your gut!" …welp, time for an abdominal echo then.
Thank you for keeping us informed. ❤
Any layoffs greater than a certain number of people in a short length of time should be required to come with benefit cuts for all C-suite executives commensurate with the total benefits lost by those employees who were fired. You're so cash strapped you need to cut 4,000 jobs to save that money? Better be willing to take that hit to your pay too
We need a law stating that executives can not make more than X percentage above their lowest paid employees.
Yeah, it's not the bill doing this. It's the billionaires.
