If a company sold me a product they could not provide, that's on them, not on me. "It's not my problem" is absolutely the correct reaction.

I got lucky when I sold my Synology NAS right before the hard drive thing. Now I just have an Ubuntu server with ZFS. It was a little harder to set up but now it's better and it's 100% mine.

I remember when older NAS units and other things would have the ability to just send you an email. They had a built in POP3 client and you would enter the credentials for an email account. Then it would be able to send you a daily/weekly report or as needed error reports etc. Needed no cloud servers run by the company and worked fine.

I've been planning to establish an Immich setup, and the Synology community contribution on the Immich website is the route I was planning to take. Interesting and timely to hear your take on Synology as a company right now. May need to revisit my plans and explore a different option

Good to know! After learning Synoology was seriously considering this sort of nonsense I don't think I'll be considering their brand in the future.

Company behavior changes the further removed from the customers the Mangers are. You care because you're close to your customer.

6:18 Ah the classic 250 chars, somewhere allong the line there is a buffer that is 250 characters long, and that limits the path, that is a legacy thing

I took a hard look at synology and even though I’m not real tech savvy, I decided to go another way. I set up a TrueNAS core system with 6-18 TB drives in ZFS2. I built the box with all the recommended hardware from their forums. I ended up having more than twice as many terabytes for the same price as I would’ve had with Synology. I built a second system that’s almost identical that it gets mirrored to every night.

Changing the term of service by taking what you already paid for… the whole “we can terminate your account and denied access to the service, without any reason given” is mind boggling how this is even legal

Several years ago a family member called me for advice about purchasing a NAS - they were leaning towards purchasing a Synology unit. After doing some price comparisons, we found that we could build a much more powerful and flexible unit cheaper than a Synlogoy unit. Yes, it required assembling it ourselves and installing/learning TrueNAS - but the lower cost, better specs, and much more flexibility far outweighed the "convenience" offered by Synology. Since then, I've built several similar units which have been rock solid.

I think that sometimes the company is pulling a fast one. And sometimes the company made a mistakes and pulls back on it because of a screw up, say the license they have for that feature actually requires a fee per device; but not everyone at the company understood this before launch. Could be either.

My NAS is an Bosch divar IP 2000 that was supposed to run only on a NT Microsoft license that expired so the previous owner put it in the electronics recycle bin. Now it`s running OpenMediaVault 8 and it`s not that much but it`s my first true NAS and I like it <3

This is why we have to use our own self hosted storage solutions

So glad I took the "removal" of the h265 codec as as sign to ditch synology. Bought an HL15 and built my own NAS/server and it's been heavenly :)

I think you nailed it. It's perfectly fine if companies decide that the old business model doesn't work as they thought it would and they advertise a new product (or updated one) as a subscription based product. Where they keep running afoul of consumers, and common sense, is that they keep doing this retroactively. "Yeah, you bought this based on our previous business model in good faith but we need more money" needs to be made illegal. You need more money, sell your product GOING FORWARD under the new model; then people can decide if it's a good value proposition for them. It's like selling a house to someone and 10 years later saying, "Well the cost of dirt has gone up around the country, we're going to need to triple the cost of your lot."
