Photography Tip #14 of 365: How to Control Colour for Better Photography 🎨📸 Welcome to Day 14 of my 365 Days of Photography Tips and Tricks series, where I share practical photography advice drawn from over 25 years of professional experience. Today’s tip is all about controlling colour in your photographs. One of the most common mistakes beginner photographers make is including too many competing colours in a single image. When every part of the frame demands attention, the viewer’s eye struggles to settle on the true subject. The result is often a photograph that feels cluttered and visually confusing. By simplifying your colour palette, you can create images that feel more intentional, balanced, and professional. A strong photograph often contains two or three dominant colours that work well together. These may be complementary colours, such as blue and orange, which create natural contrast, or analogous colours, such as green and yellow, which produce a more harmonious and subtle effect. Colour can also be used to direct the viewer’s attention. For example, a subject wearing a bright red jacket in an otherwise neutral scene will immediately stand out. This technique is particularly effective in street photography, travel photography, portraits, and editorial work. When composing your image, take a moment to look beyond your subject and study the colours throughout the frame. Ask yourself: * Are there too many colours competing for attention? * Can I change my angle to simplify the scene? * Would waiting for a subject in a contrasting colour improve the composition? By consciously controlling colour, you can strengthen your compositions, create better visual flow, and tell more compelling stories. This is one of those simple techniques that can dramatically improve your photography without requiring any new equipment.
