The luggage rules abroad that cost Americans a lot of money. #traveltips

This catches SO many Americans off guard in Europe… Your carry-on that fits perfectly on US airlines might suddenly be “too big” the second you fly a European airline. And yes… they absolutely will charge you for it at the gate. Sometimes a LOT. ✈️ Here’s what people don’t realize In the US, airlines rarely weigh your carry-on. You stuff it, you board, done. Europe - especially budget carriers - is a completely different game. They have strict size AND weight limits, and they enforce them. And honestly it’s not just Europe - many airlines outside the US operate this way. Australian, Asian, and European carriers all tend to be stricter. The US is the outlier. ⚖️ Weight limits Many European budget airlines cap cabin bags at 7-8kg. That is about 15-17 pounds. Add a laptop, shoes, and a toiletry bag and you are already pushing it. Go over and you are paying gate fees on the spot - Ryanair charges up to €50 ($55) just to check a bag at the gate. On some carriers it can hit €80-100 ($90-110). 📐 Size limits Many airports and carriers make you test your bag in a physical sizer at the gate. A bag that slides into every US overhead bin might not pass. Check the exact dimensions for every airline on your trip - including connection legs. Getting flagged on a connecting carrier is where people really get surprised. ✈️ Budget vs full service Ryanair, easyJet, Wizz Air, Vueling enforce their rules more aggressively than almost any airline Americans are used to flying. Lufthansa, British Airways, KLM - generally more generous. Know which type you are flying before you assume anything. 🧳 What to do before you pack Go to the actual airline policy page - not a general article. Weigh your empty bag. Know exactly how much room you are working with before you start filling it. Two minutes now saves you a $110 surprise at the gate. 🧳 Want to know exactly what we pack after 7 years of full-time travel?
