I live in a small town. The nearest airport is at least 2 1/2 hours away so I have to travel and usually stay at a hotel the night before a flight. I wear clothing that I will be taking with me on the drive to the airport. Pack my travel outfit in its own packing/compression cube. That evening before bed, (flight is usually early AM) I swap out my travel outfit and pack away what I was wearing and put it in my carry on. (Extra plastic zip bag for the dirty undies and socks). I have the sheet laundry detergent and can rip it in half if I’m just washing in the sink. I’ve learned a lot from your videos and appreciate it as I’m an over 60 solo traveler who definitely prefers to stress less.
Your fluffy assistant is sleeping on the job! Great video, thank you!
Have traveled for 50 years. Pajamas go on the top as you’ll need them very soon after you get there. Don’t want to dig for them. Shoes go sideways with bottom against the side of the suitcase. Socks go inside the shoes. No compression bags. Every one of those takes up space that I can use for something I can wear. Just keep smashing stuff down. Roll clothes. Earlier to smoosh stuff together. 2 pair shoes. 1 on feet, 1 in suitcase.
Grocery bags. I reuse them for all sorts of things, but I put my shoes in them before packing. Then one goes with me when I go to the beach, so put my wet stuff in it. It's a free-ish resource where I live and they really work well.
Save your old grocery produce bags to cover shoes!
Thank you! I hate travel, flying, and leaving home! Yes, a devout coward. This video was so helpful and somehow calming 😊
The very BEST way to pack a flat base- buy a Briggs and Riley. The case has the bars on the OUTSIDE of the bag- worth every penny you spend. They also are the smoothest rolling wheels( we prefer the. 2 wheel form) and have a very interesting compression system. I bought mine second hand and will not look ant any other case, and we travel a lot. I have even converted my husband who no longer wants any other case. If you can swing the cost, you will not be sad
Love the idea packing a cube with a change of clothes and take photos of your inside & outside of luggage. You are the best !
Laurie, I’ve learned so much from your packing videos these past few years, especially about compression packing cubes: I ALWAYS weigh my bag several hours before leaving the house to eliminate that false sense of security. And I found some long, thin compression cubes that fit into those suitcase valleys that I use for unmentionables & socks. As always, thanks for ALL you do, & Happy Easter!
Aullie is an awesome assistant 🐾 So many options and tips ! Happy Easter ~ HE IS RISEN !
I am doing a spring trip to Italy, so the weather & temp will vary. As I’m only a max of a couple of days in each place sink laundry is challenging. Everything, except for my cardigan is quick dry. One travel hack is that I pack my good underwear and take a couple of pairs of “retired” undies and socks. One pair for the plane flight and one pair to change into part way through. I just throw the old underwear away as I travel. The “good” underwear starts getting used on the day after I arrive and I’m not doing sink laundry until the evening of day 2.
This is very good ideas for packing. I always get overwhelmed when I have to pack.
A new Laurie video! Yay! 🎉
Great tips, Laurie, as always! I have lost a LOT of weight recently and have needed new clothes. The new things heave all been arriving packaged in sturdy zip type bags. I plan on using those bags to pack my clothing, shoes, and makeup in those bags. It will keep those clothes safe from any type of spillage (trust me, I’ve had the TSA open all my makeup and spill it into my clothing.) Soooo, the see-through, free, bags SHOULD prevent that….I hope. I have also been known to wear something that I no longer want and threw it away when I got to my destination. Not too shabby, but discardable.
We are advised not to tie anything to the luggage handle because it might get caught in airport machinery. Instead get the brightly colored handle wraps that velcro around the handle with a place to write ID inside. Mine are neon green & bright orange.
I plan on wearing a travel vest with many pockets on an upcoming trip to Europe. I know we are not allowed 3 bags getting on the plane. My question is, right before we land, could I pull out my purse and take things out of my vest to put in my purse? My vest is essentially my purse on the plane. As I leave would it be okay to have 3 bags, or should I stuff the purse back into my personal item bag and just walk off the plane with my personal item and carry on suitcase? Might not seem like a big deal, but my husband gets impatient and wants to get out of the airport and on our way as soon as possible. If I can accomplish part of my landing transfers before I get off the plane, all the better. More time to freshen up in the restroom once we land. Hope this makes sense.
Hi Laurie. I always learn something from you. TFS

Wow this video is jam-packed full of great tips 😂 Thank you!
I used to stuff all sox & undies in my shoes. Now I put small toiletries in ziplocks and put those in my shoes. Sox/undies/pjs go in the compression cubes since it doesn’t matter if they get wrinkled. For cold climates I put my scarf/gloves/beanie in a compression cube (they are super smooshable). That goes in my personal item bag so I can pull it out before exiting the airport.
