If you use a ribbon on your bag, tie it then cut it short. Loose ribbons can get caught in machinery.
I was shocked a couple weeks ago at Houston airport watching guy in front of me leave his loose wallet, watch and tablet in tsa bin, and then waste time getting confused with instructions on which direction to go. The tsa lady actually had to say no you're other right. 😂 Meanwhile he paid no attention to his bins. Wow.

Re: weighing your bag at home, I've gotten boned by using an analog scale before, even though it was a reputable brand (samsonite). To be confident you've weighed it accurately, try to take several measurements to see if the figure is consistent, or use a digital hand scale. Even better, bring said digital hand scale along with you to be able to weigh your luggage on the return trip as well. I bought mine at decathlon but they seem to be a fairly generic item. Re: straps - the several times I've used them, I've tightened them as much as possible at home before the trip, only to discover they've gotten completely loose by the time I'm grabbing them off the conveyor. Not sure why that is, or how common that experience is, and again they were from a reputable brand, samsonite again. Also packing cubes are a must for me, doubly so if its getting opened and needs to be repacked at the airport either by me or by customs agents.

It used to be if you agreed to gate check your carry-on, you would be able to pick it up at the gangway when you got off the flight. But now they want to check it through to baggage claim. No one wants that if they went to the trouble of traveling carry-on only. I'm sure they get a lot less volunteers. Why have they done this??

Outside of the US it's very important to have a backup phone or at least a backup tablet. What are you going to do if your phone dies? You can't just buy a new one and sign in. Most security will not allow it. I travel 7 months a year and always carry 2 phones and one old tablet.

Was flying a cheap airline here in Asia. Easy Jet. Switch between another airline so when I should check in they said my hand luggage was to heavy. It finished with I stand holding stuff under my arm and the weight was fine, then I could put back my stuff and continue...

20+ years ago the largest travel site at the time sold me a 45M connection with a different carrier in O'Hare in a different terminal. Silly me for not checking. They rebooked me at NC after a phone call.
