Inside Benin 🇧🇯 One of Africa’s Least Visited Countries

I had heard about Zangbeto before coming to Benin, but nothing prepares you for seeing it in person. The entire atmosphere changes the moment it appears. People gather quietly. The drums start building. Then this massive figure covered completely in straw begins spinning through the crowd while everyone watches with a mix of excitement, respect, and fear. In southern Benin, Zangbeto is known as a spiritual protector. For generations, these masquerades were believed to watch over communities at night, protect villages, and maintain order long before modern security systems existed. What stood out to me most was how serious people were about it. This wasn’t treated like entertainment. It felt deeply respected. Many locals genuinely believe the Zangbeto is controlled by spiritual forces rather than the person underneath. And honestly, when you see the movements up close, the energy around it, and the reaction from the crowd… you understand why. Experiencing this in Ouidah gave me a deeper appreciation for how much culture, spirituality, and tradition are still actively preserved in Benin today. In many parts of the world, traditions like this disappeared generations ago. Here, they are still alive.
