Have you reviewed Springboard? If you have or have seen any deep dives into it, I'd love to watch it.

One of my former co workers was a self taught software engineer. He was one of the most exceptional engineers I've ever met. So teaching your self is definitely possible, but I think most people need structure and guidance, which is hard when you teach yourself. It takes a very specific kind of discipline to succeed.

Bootcamps are trying to sell short cuts. "How do I gain this really specific skill that takes years to acquire and hone so that I can impress a hiring manager . . . . in 8 - 10 weeks" Its basically asking "How do I lose 100lb of fat and get ripped in 90 days". And they are equally productive

This video has really helped me make a decision. I was going to enroll in a Bootcamp through UC Berkeley because I have always struggled with Coding. I did a Data Science degree a few years back in France, and I survived, but was too overwhelmed at the time to really get into developing. Covid has turned all these bootcamps into online learning and when I really looked into the bootcamp, I realized that most of it was very basic and the main languages of Java and Python, were self-taught pre-recorded modules. So, I am going to go self-taught with assistance maybe from a mentor / tutor.

i agree. don't waste your money on something that just tells you "GO LEARN THIS YOURSELF". that's a waste. thanks you saved my money. i'm learning by myself and pushing through the grind that is the odin project.

I agree to a point for this. I just really need the curriculum and guidance. Coding and etc should be learned in a specific order.

Hey, Dorian. You are very courageous for attempting, tackling, and succeeding in teaching yourself the many aspects of web and software development. I have watched several of your videos, so I have kept up with your journey, some. Yes, you are correct. It is a challenging job keeping up with tech, period. You learn stuff. Some stuff dies off. You learn new stuff. It's a cycle. Someone always has a better idea. Now, I have met several people that went to bootcamps with varying degrees of prior knowledge. Here is my perspective. Bootcamps are classes. If college classes hyped themselves up as much as bootcamps .... anyway. Seriously, I think some people want the bootcamp experience. You can go to any library at a public university and learn all the math and science that you want to, but people still pay to go to class. I say all this having gone to school some, and I have taught myself many things in tech. There is room for everyone, and some people really need that structure--the threat of a bad outcome--to keep them going when they first start off. Some people do the bootcamps just to meet people, or for the challenge of it. If college was doing a good enough job and was more accessible (even community college makes you take pre-requisite courses); and if on-line resources were sufficient to provide information, guidance, community, networking, direct connections to employers, and a technology stack compass; then bootcamps might not be flourishing. They are flourishing because they give people hope, something that on-line resources are not great at. So, with my background, I admire you. I like your content, and I agree with a lot of it. However, I also see where after being in tech (one way or the other) since 1996 .... let a couple of decades pass. You will value being able to "just do" sometimes, instead of being responsible for learning, predicting, and executing just to stay current. What is more, a bootcamp is a tangible thing. It is a brick in the wall of experience. People are conditioned to get out of their home environment to learn and to help reinforce what they learn. People want to be immersed with others. In that way, bootcamps offer a community of people that are all doing the same thing at the same time. I say that, and I am no big bootcamp champion. However, I do see some advantages. Should a bootcamp cost $10,000.00 or more? If the market will bears it, yes. It's capitalism. I would also say that while I agree with using free resources, do a couple decades in tech. You will see that doing a bootcamp might not just be for people getting into tech / coding. Sometimes, it is a way to get current. If companies like Amazon start paying for them, as mentioned in my article, then what would be the argument against them, then? /pulse/boot-camps-experiment-human-learning-profit-tool-helping-rutledge/ We all pay our dues. Remember what Larry Wall, the creator of Perl says in the Camel Book, "There's more than one way to do it." Peace, my friend. Carry on!

I recently applied for 2 "different" coding camps of some well known schools, just for their landing pages and all their info to be exactly the same. Even the assessment, to see if you can handle the course before you apply, had the same exact questions. I'm not really sure if I trust the schools anymore.

This was an amazing video man, here in Latin America a lot of coding boot camps are popping out from nowhere and its costs are absurdly high for our economy it's really an scam here

Just completed the Full Stack from Nucamp. Still have a lot to learn but you really get a roadmap, a community and support which is something you can’t get learning on your own. The price makes it a low risk investment if you consider the price of a degree that you might not even use. Anyway my two cents so far, still new to all this…
