I completed Fluenz levels 1-5 and they didn't teach the subjunctive! I kept thinking that there was something wrong with me as I kept seeing words like "vaya, Haz, seas" I spent all so much time and I didn't learn the subjunctive. The subjunctive is not an advanced level skill as the sentence, "I hope that you can come to my party" is NOT an advanced sentence. I wish Spanish teachers would teach the language and let their students see the big picture. Once the big picture is shown a student can then learn it the way their brain organizes it.
Great video because i agree with every thing he says
I learned English without grammar. I have no idea what a past participle is, or a dangling participle, or the different names for the past tense. I learned to speak English before I went to school and trust me- English grammar classes didn't help me very much.
I agree. Quote self "There is NO short cuts to goodness". Thank you.
Currently I am in Dénia at tlcDenia studying Spanish, finished my 2nd week today. I have had ~1500 days of Duolingo to give me a jump start, which has worked, so that I am going to finish A2 next week. In the course, we really get to speaking, which is something Duolingo cannot provide, and of course a lot of grammar. The tenses in Spanish are so different from those I know from other languages, especially all the different past tenses. It's a pity we haven't learned the subjunctive yet, but I have had a look into it. It's so important! Today I had a nice encounter with a man from the Netherlands who is here on vacation. I chatted with him in Dutch and he said after a while: "I suppose you are from Belgium." In the North of Belgium they speak Dutch as well, but with a slightly different pronunciation. Actually, I started learning Dutch in evening classes at the age of 42, and now this man is surprised that I'm not from a Dutch speaking country. Maybe some day someone from a Spanish speaking country might think that I'm from another Spanish speaking country ... it will be a long way, though.
Just from the thumbnail, I couldn’t agree more! I feel like advising not to learn grammar is pretty stupid, I first started learning Spanish in high school and the whole thing went over my head until I finished the class and bought lesson books for myself, but by doing those lessons, I got the basics down that gave me the foundation to actually build my Spanish on. I’m also someone that worries about getting comfortable saying things incorrectly so often that you don’t even know what the correct way is anymore, and then it’s 5 times as hard to course correct and learn the actual correct way because you’ve been winging it the whole time, essentially. It’s not even that hard to learn the grammar because Spanish follows rules for the most part. If you don’t want to learn the grammar from the very start, okay, but you should eventually, otherwise…. I guess you’re not serious about becoming intermediate or advanced in Spanish..
It is easier to sell. People want the easy path. Learn Spanish while you sleep and wake up speaking Spanish! Take this magic pill and you'll be speaking Spanish in no time!
So true. I'm stuck around B2 and get by. I can get by in the hospital, with a lawyer, with the accountant, listening to Spanish talk radio, in the home, etc, etc. But reading something like an article in El País (depends on the journo) have going, er..., WTF are they talking about - I don't even understand the headline!
I always get a good laugh when I see things like - Learn 2000 Words in 7 Days and Understand 90% of Any Language - or - Learn Any Language in an Afternoon Using This Method. There is no such thing as instant language acquisition.
Completely agree. It is like saying you don't need to practice scales to play the piano. Sure, but it will massively delay the time it takes for you to be considered a good player if you don't have that muscle memory. No wonder we have a generation of kids emerging who are lost because they are being told effort and hard graft is for mugs.
Why have a teacher? The only teacher I had was a post-A-level course in Torquay in 2000, no grammar involved. Sure, to learn the verb endings and the different type of verb endings is essential in the beginning but not afterwards, you should be imitating Spanish native speakers, both spoken and written, that is enough. I need to observe how Spaniards use the subjunctive, not sit in a class where somebody teaches the SUBJUNCTIVE. Boring. Fails to inspire the aspiring student. Sadly, this sounds like a teacher advising students to use a teacher. I don't think this is the right approach at all. Learning by ear means copying the grammar Spanish speakers use, to claim this is the wrong approach is sheer nonsense. ctually, I have and continue to struggle far more with pronounciation that grammar. And my accent is relatively good. But grammar is of course much easier to teach. And the Academies love it, you don't get a C1 certificate for clear pronounciation or good copying, merely for rote learning what the Spanish Academy claims are the rules. I don't know more than the rudiments of all the names for the grammar diversity, understandable as you don't need to know these names to speak good Spanish, or nay language. Why would you think listening and copying what you hear is a grammar fail. Such an old-fashioned, schoolboy approach.
Literally, Steve Kaufmann (the language guy, lingosteve) emphasizing "DO NOT study grammar". Why? Because he knows like 60+ languages. Cynthia & Gordon, THANK YOU for being absolute legends! ¡Sois unos cracks! -Ruebdogg, desde Colorado EEUU
If this were The Matrix, it’d be a simple upload. Lol. Thanks, Gordon. 😊
What are some of the wild promises about learning Spanish that you have seen across the years?😊
