Other side of the coin is I feel people trick themselves into thinking long form content is automatically better. It's super easy to just shut your brain off during a 2 hour video essay and only half understand what's actually being said while you're distracted by fancy professional editing and a convincing voice, and then turn around and denounce short form media.
I had the pre-existing belief that short form content and social media are bad for your brain, so this video reinforced my biases which makes them true! And then I left a comment to show that I had my biases reinforced!
sometimes i rly do wonder if some of the "memes from the discord basement" clips/captions are actually handcrafted by the cia or smth to desensitize the public when it comes to real issues (we saw it w charlie kirk, the files, and now iran/concepts of ww3). it feels like one of those societal experiments we'll learn was true when we all have our own kids 10-20 yrs from now
Thank you for charismatically reinforcing my believes.
Been progressively deleting all of the apps I use most on my phone because I noticed I keep spending more and more hours a day wasted away on it without noticing other than doing something productive. When I need to finish said productive thing, I've already procrastinated enough to force myself into working 12 hours on school stuff just to collapse in class the next day and call sick or else I'd puke right then and there. I think my generation's main problem is going to revolve around this madness because people keep becoming less critical everyday. Half of my class can't resist the urge to just ask an AI to do their school work when we have to do anything reading related.
I used to watch tik tok 5 hours a day and fell into many diffrent pipe lines. I didnt notice it back then but looking back you are entierly correct. I used to wonder why for example there is no left wing people in right wing posts and the oposite, it truly is just a huge echo chamber.

2:20 an algorithm is literally js an echo chamber

God I wish I could disable shorts, never got on anything beyond YouTube and now the app defaults to opening shorts when I open the app.
my 9 year old brother has been watching shorts for 5h+/day since he was SIX. he is unable to go anywhere without his phone, he forgets tasks he was assigned just a couple seconds ago and he gets angry at people extremely quickly. Its extremely sad to watch him turn into a zombie like this and my parents just letting it happen, knowing whats happening. Around a year ago he started using 2 screens at once where he now plays roblox on his playstation and scrolls shorts at once which made everything just worse. He does this everyday and doesnt miss a day. Im very worried for him.
3:35 Glad this young buck said what I was thinking for me, phew
okay but this is like telling a smoker to quit smoking because it’s bad for their health
gem alert!! this video is rly underrated and honestly nowadays it seems like critical thinking is being debilitated by social media
i added shorts blocks to my ad block list so i even don't see those anymore <3 it is literally a time sink with zero reward in the end
I consume a lot of short-form content and I've been trying to give up, because I could've been doing lots of other things that actually sastify me instead of doomscroling. I had tiktok since 2019 and over time it has been pushing u more and more into staying in the app. Before I would watch some videos and then stop, now I watch some video and after 30min or an hour I realise "omg it was supost to be 1 video, how long have I been here?". And they push u a looot of rage-bait content which they didnt before. I feel like the fat guys in those flying chairs in Wall-E. Frankie so cute btw
one thing I do nowadays is listen to a lot of different kinds of long form vids (i love a good yap, like this lol). it's way more rewarding imo and I'm often left w food for thought
Social media wasn't nearly as bad in the 2000s and early 2010s. Around 2015/2016, most major social media platforms switched from a reverse chronological/people you follow based feed to an algorithmic feed; and right afterwards is when we saw a massive surge in toxicity. People always say everything went to shit in 2016, and this perception is actually true if your worldview is entirely dependent on what you consume online. Once TikTok was launched in 2018, followed by a slew of copycat features on older platforms, the stage was set for the death of the internet.
