Why Is There a Space Before the 0 on a Ruler, and What is it For?

Education

The blank space before the zero on a ruler is a seemingly useless detail that actually serves multiple brilliant purposes. In this video, we explain why this margin exists step by step using real history, design principles, and manufacturing insights. The Space Before Zero on a Ruler Explained: Why Is It There? | Simple Things Surprising Histories This documentary style episode from Simple Things Surprising Histories covers the hidden design secrets behind the modern ruler, from physical wear and tear to mass-production challenges. Topics covered in this video: • What the blank space on a standard ruler is actually for • How physical wear, chipped corners, and damage affect measurement accuracy • Why the zero line is never printed on the exact physical edge • The industrial challenges of mass-producing and cutting rulers • How factories slice rulers without destroying the numerical scale • The psychological and educational purpose of the gap for young students • How hidden design features protect everyday tools Chapters: 00:00 - Intro: The Invisible Mystery 00:50 - Chapter 1: The Enemy of Precision 01:48 - Chapter 2: The Factory Floor Concession 02:42 - Chapter 3: A Lesson Hidden in Plain Sight 03:31 - Outro: The Value of Nothing This video is designed for students, educators, and general audiences who want a clear explanation of everyday design without unnecessary complexity. All explanations are factual, educational, and suitable for learning purposes. If you are searching for: why is there a space on a ruler ruler zero mark explained history of the ruler everyday object design secrets how rulers are made why doesn't a ruler start at the edge hidden features of everyday objects measurement tools explained design secrets of simple things, this video provides a complete and accurate overview. #EverydayDesign #HowItsMade #RulerExplained #DesignSecrets #HiddenFeatures #MeasurementTools #EducationalDocumentary #scienceexplained #sciencefacts #sciencedocumentary #simplethings #simplethingssurprisinghistories

I'm obsessing all the things that I have measured all my life.. lol. Thank you for this info. Love it. Subscribed

At 1:20, anyone see the ai slop cant count? 25, 26, 27, 28, 35....

I always measure from 0, I don't count the empty space. But then, I only do crafts etc, not wood work.

The empty space makes it impossible to measure on the inside of a drawer for instance, because you need to start at zero. You need a (steel) ruler which starts at zero to do this.

In my 57 years of life I've never seen a ruler wear out on the ends or edges. We broke them in half fighting each other in school but never have I seen regular wear and tear that would make an ending 0 mark unusable.

There is half a centimeter (5mm) at most of blank rule before the 0 in your examples.

There are disadvantages to the gap though. You can't place it edgeways down and measure accurately.

I needed to measure out from the wall the other day and that little space made it difficult to calculate. Normally it's not a problem though.

On a "Zollstock" the 0 is exactly the edge of the wood, which does measuring much easier.

The real answer is that the number "0" and the last one (e. G 50 20 100) must be centered on the first and last mark. So they need space on the left and on the right of the edge. Then when you draw you have to go over the limit..if the rulers would start from zero you should start drawing the line from 1..

البدايه صفر مسافه من الصفر الي 1 1 سنتيمتر والمسافه من 1 الي 2 1 سنتيمتر لازم يبتدي من الصفر لان واحد سنتيمتر تبتدئ من الصغدفر

That's why I use calipers!

I had already figured that out myself 🙄

I was thinking of the negative numbers after the zero mark on the left hand side are invisible 😂😂😂😂

The most practical reason from the perspective of children who grew up with ruler is not manufacture but wear and tear as explained It might be possible to manufacture but it would be vulnerable

The space on the ruler before the zero is that it helps one think, things through.😊😅😂

Zero Error not discussed... that you have to clear... after taking a measure

Well being a teacher I thought it was to give it more weight for whacking pupils on the back of the hand . Also Ive always found it a nuisance when tryiing to measure the old chap.

Good question. I googled it instead of spending 5 minutes waiting for you to tell it.
