When you get to your airplane seat, roll your jacket and stuff it into the trash bag for the airplane. I stuff my puffer in the small pouch that comes with it and then use it as a back pillow on the plane.

I do the same but just stuff it in a packing cube & use a carabiner to clip it on my backpack so I don’t forget it, or sometimes if it’s cold on the plane I just keep my jacket on.
I bought a travel sized pillow case and fold my jacket in there. It squishes into my personal item bag, then it’s a nice pillow for my flight.
the japanese clothing brand uniqlo has the ultra light down jacket which can be folded and rolled into a more portable form and comes with a small drawstring pouch to store it in; i have their pocketable uv protection parka (built for sun and light rain) that has the same portability function as the down jacket

I used your tip to fly to New Zealand. The sniffer dog at the airport in Auckland pointed at me and I had my personal bag searched. The grocery bag inside must have had fruit in it and this raised the dogs keen sense of smell. So use a clean bag, not a used bag. They let me go with no penalty. 😂 wasn’t funny at the time.
I roll or fold it and use it as lumbar support for the airplane seat. I'll also take my husband's and fold it and sit on it for more cushion when I sit

i do this for items on my person that have to be taken off going through TSA! those bins are nasty
My jacket i remove and usually have behind and underneath me as I have thoroughly lysol wiped the seat and i just keep my hoodie on as i prefer that my head not touch the headrest. I also bring a garbage and put my backpack in that to keep it clean while under the seat
My Lands End jacket has a bag built into the pocket that the jacket will pack into.
I would tie it on the suitcase handle so I can have one hand free.
Bad advice! Never put your jacket under your front seat, you will be kicking it after wc visits, it’s very dirty ☝🏽
When I board I put my down jacket into a silk pillowcase and use it as a pillow.
