Concerning public transport passes: the 72 hours one will most likely be worth it for most people. I mean you want to explore the city so you will use public transport at least 4 times a day. Keep in mind that if you buy single ticket and you want to change from one bus to another - you have to buy another single ticket. You don't have to worry about that with the pass. Just for the record - I wouldn't call Budapest public transport cheap, but it's certainly cheaper than a taxi. Using a combination of metro and trams will save you a lot of time
3:10 I'd also recommend the Fehérvári úti Market hall in Újbuda, it is right next to the southern Terminus of Tram 4. My grandma always used to go shopping there in the early morning for fresh vegetables or other ad hoc things she needed for cooking that day.

Another cheaper option than a river cruise if walking the banks is going to be a challenge for you is to just get one of the trams that goes along the bank and over a bridge one way, then swapping to a different tram to do the same. It's possible to do a circular route this way and if you already have a travelcard, it's free. Just pick a seat on the river side of the tram and it's a nice way to see everything whilst seated. We did this on our last night. We'd done the river cruise and walking the banks, but the last night we really wanted to just take it all in again one last time and thought that would be a good way to do it. Some of the trams are decorated on the outside with fairy lights around the Christmas period. If anyone is travelling then, keep your eye out for the decorated ones. Budapest is a beautiful city. I would recommend it to anyone. I would definitely love to go back again.
