I spent $1200 for a solo two weeks spanning four areas which included flights, accommodation, land transportation and personal expenses. My frens were astonished like how in the world. It's possible to spend less and still enjoy the best of what Japan has to offer.

Do you have any recommendations for stores where you get well you know... The weeb stuff for a decent price my wallet can only go so far, Also what places do you recommend visiting?

Definitely use the skyline once landing to Narita to get to Ueno station. Start there if your planning to visit where I did like a day ago being in Japan you can then take the JR green line trains to harajuku, akihabra, ikebukuro and more

You don't want to go there and be a bum. I lived in Hokkaido for many years. Short trips take local trains, but for trips 4 plus hours take express. Capsul hotels are good in Tokyo, but small hotels on smaller places are great. Spring for a ryoukan for one night. Eat good sushi, ramen, and yakiniku at least one time each. Hangaku happens in grocery stores on raw items that become 50 percent off usually after 5:30. If you just go on "the cheap" don't go. Use moderation. Go up north to Hokkaido as it's beatiful. AND TREAT YOURSELF TO SOME FRUIT. IT'S THE BEST.

Fruit can be affordable in Japan, just buy them from supermarkets and fruit stalls in residential areas instead of department store basement supermarkets

If I stayed at a capsule hotel I'd be afraid even with the light on that I'd wake up and think I'd been buried alive.

This is great advice, but I couldn't do the capsule hotel. I have bad claustrophobia, but also there is no door to lock. From everyone I've seen it's either shades to pull down or curtains to close

I often stay at Toyoko Inns. Ridiculously cheap compared to accomodations in the US. Pretty decent breakfast included. All at 1/3-1/4 of what the lower cost motels charge. Ok, room is tiny, but most everything is modern and well maintained.

I got majority of my nights for around 15-20 euros a night and not bad places either, often my own room but sometimes hostel dorms

Take the bus. Longer traveling hours but cheaper. Why be in a hurry, you're on a vacation.

There was a time when women could not stay at capsule hotels. Do they now have separate areas for men and women so the latter get the security of more privacy?
