It's the airfare to get to all these places that is expensive. Once you are there it may be cheap, but getting there is another story
I'm from Poland and while it might be possible to get a basic meal for $6, you should probably expect more like 15-20 per person in a typical restaurant especially in major cities. The only difference, if you're coming from say, the US, is that the food is actually of very good quality.
United States gives me sticker shock every time I come back it's absolutely atrocious how we are taken to the cleaners all day long and we think it's normal. Not only do you see a high price but you also see tax on top plus tips. It's insane in the rest of the world the price you see is the price you pay and it's much lower than here. In Southeast Asia I was getting by with under 25 day
My grandma Celina Biniaz is from Krakow, and she and her parents worked at the Schindler factory and were survivors on Schindler’s list. She loved growing up there despite her holocaust experience, and I can’t say enough good things about visiting Poland! 🇵🇱
Bosnia and Herzegovina is amazing and indeed very affordable. I would also recommend visiting Trebinje there - great small town
I live in Guatemala. Do NOT eat the street food unless you are having a relationship with porcelain. Also do NOT ride the Chicken Buses. My Guatemalan wife was almost killed in one a few years ago. The drivers are crazy and a short trip includes 20 stops. Other than that, Guatemala is an incredible place to visit or live.
If you’re doing Krakow, you absolutely have to visit the salt mines. Genuinely an unbelievable experience
Another European country that is very affordable is Romania. Is very beautiful and the Dracula castle is great and city of Brasov also.
We love Montenegro. We stayed near Herceg Novi, right next to the border with Croatia. During the second week while walking through the old town we were stopped by another British family and they told us we were the first English speakers they had encountered. We said “it’s the same for us, you’re the first English speakers we have encountered. And that’s why we love this place!!”
I’m married to a Guatemalan and been there 33 times in 28 years. All your points are spot on but I still don’t eat street food, lol!

Was in Uzbekistan last week. Around a week of 3/4 star hotels, 2 private guided tours, many cafes, amazing meals, taxi & subway rides…all total around 720 USD. …and you get to see iconic historical sites in Samarkand/Bukhara with comparatively very few tourists…
As a Filipino I cannot disagree with your recommendation, but just FWIW: a lot of us have actually been traveling to Vietnam and Malaysia…. simply because it’s a better VALUE than us exploring many parts of our OWN country 🤷 :-/ (western visitors + opportunistic tourism-players….. have made many of the island spots… less-accessible😢)
I second your recommendation of Poland - Krakow was gorgeous! And my visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau was humbling and meaningful. Would love to visit Montenegro or other of the Balkan countries at some point in the future.

Interesting list, very similar to mine this year. Also great point about Northern Thailand. But with Poland, I'm not sure when you last visited — it's definitely left the budget-friendly zone. Similar story with Montenegro to be honest. Happy travels this coming year!
I know you can’t really recommend it because right now travel is very nerve wrecking and iffy but Ukraine is and was one of my favorite budget destinations! I’m actually taking a trip to Krakow at the end next year and if conditions are the same or better (🤞) we will be taking a bus to Lviv and spending a day and an evening there before going back to Krakow and on to Warsaw. I also really liked Prague! I feel like you get the charm of the east and west of Europe and on a budget! It’s a lovely city! Also, I have not been to Guatamala, but I have been to Chiapas in Mexico. I’m sure Guatemala is beautiful based on how beautiful Chiapas was! When it comes to beaches and sights, Bacalar and some parts of Belize are super underrated! I feel like all the attention goes to Cancun and Tulum (which are so expensive) and people are missing out on not traveling to these destinations further south! Especially Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker!
