I believe I read this in Bill Bryson's "A Short History of Nearly Everything" that there was a specific and very rare species of ground bird that only lived on one island, and one year the entire population went very suddenly extinct. Scientists discovered it was because the lighthouse keeper got a cat.

Outdoor cats and strays are responsible for decimating local animal populations. Cats are one of few animals that kill for sport and not just food. So, birds and lizards and whatever that actually help the local environment? Your outdoor cat is murdering them and causing genuine wildlife problems.

The rust spotted cat in the Amazon (?) has a similar kill ratio to the black footed cat, I think. It's also very tiny and very cute
Surely this also has something to do with the availibility of prey in it's habitations. If you put that kitty into Siberia, it's not going to outperform a Lynx.
