There was strike of the garbage collectors in Amsterdam a while ago that was probably when you visited, normally it isn’t that bad

Amsterdam is one of the cleanest cities and that must have been during an event in the city centre. They are out with the road sweepers every morning and it is usually very clean.

The fines keeps people accountable. In Singapore people can be sent to prison or even deported for having a chewing gum. In Switzerland you get fined 100 Swiss francs on the spot for throwing litter the “wrong” way
