Yes for using Roku remote only it handles most of your needs, I don't have any issues just using TV remote to change to another device that works just fine too, but most of the time it just on streaming so not needed.
I have a 2015 Shield that I saved from being tossed. It is a beast still, and I love it. I have the ProjectIvy launcher on it, and that alone has made it feel brand new.
What I love about Rokus is the Private Listening feature. My wife and I have a small place, and being able to watch the TV with headphones has kept us from switching to Apple TV
My Roku can be set either to turn on tht RV or turn it off, even though the setup suggests it should do both

Ditched Apple TV, Roku, and others many years back. I’ve been with Nvidia Shield TV since 2017 and it hasn’t failed me. Even use it for other streaming applications like my Meta Quest 3, and PC to Shield gaming today.
In my case, I’m mostly good just using the Roku remote. Since my other devices I use on the TV also have CEC, when I turn on them on to use (like the Xbox or PS5), my tv will automatically switch to the correct input. If I want to go back to the Roku, I just press the home button on the Roku remote and the input switches back.
I have a Roku Ultra and I like it a lot. True my comparison is the Fire TV line up so… I like things like being able to downgrade the video to reduce bandwidth something you can’t do on Fire TV. I’m really interested in watching your Ohn video next. But I gotta say that I got my Ultra for $60 on sale so I don’t compare it to an Apple TV.

I'm a big techie and have always been early for things so I'm used to just having to deal with certain problems but these days I am fully on board with the "one remote to rule them all" train. I don't even like grabbing the remote to control my bed. I wish I had a universal remote for that too

Interesting. I've exclusively used Roku almost since their beginning. I don't see adverting other than, You might like these streaming services, nags. Not having access to your other TV inputs would drive me crazy. I've not attempted CEC, I only use Roku remote for power-on & volume (intermittent volume struggle).
Best investment I've made in regards to this was the Shield Pro. And yes I still recommend it to this day even though it's old. Mine is still ridiculously snappy and the find remote feature is a live saver.
I have Onn boxes on all my tvs at home. They are fast, very customizable, easy to use, and easy on the wallet.
I have apple tv 4k 1st gen bought like 7 years back still working flawlessly without any lag, my first choice was shield tv but in my country it's selling for more then double price of apple tv, even the latest model apple tv is half price of that 10 year old (my guess) shield.
I use an AV receiver so the TV doesn’t change inputs, the receiver does. So I just grab the streaming box remote or console controller and the right channel on the receiver is selected.
I have 3 shields 2 Onn and 1 AppleTV. Performance and software it’s a no brainer the Apple TV is by far the best. It’s so fast and clean. If you start going down the road of local content that is where Apple drops the ball. They don’t give full access to hdr and audio decoders. The Shield is starting to show its age I get laggy interfaces in Kodi at times where the Apple TV is usually a lot faster. In the End on the big TV with the Home Theater setup gets the Shiekd. The upstairs living room gets the appletv. Bedroom shiekd outside on patio Onn in the garage Onn
