⚡ In the autumn of 1347, twelve ships sailed into a Sicilian harbor — and no one on shore could have known they were about to witness the end of the medieval world. The Black Death killed somewhere between a third and half of all Europeans in just six years. You know the horror. You know the numbers. But here's what most history classes never tell you: the worst pandemic in human history didn't just destroy the medieval world — it accidentally, brutally, against everyone's will, built the modern one. Discover how a bacterium traveling on a flea's back shattered the feudal system, cracked the authority of the Church, created the first labor market in European history, and planted the seeds of the Renaissance, the Reformation, and the individual rights you live inside of today. Follow this story from the rodent colonies of Central Asia to a Mongol siege weapon made of corpses, from the rotting streets of Florence to the first moment a peasant could look his lord in the eye and say no. Skilled workers like Masons and carpenters became journey men A Skilled worker in say Liverpool could be asked to work in Birmingham whereas before the plague could only work for their lord. But now his lord may also require workers from outside his own land so had to go along with this This was the beginning of workers freedom

There is one vitally important side effect of the Plague that was overlooked. It is a genetic mutation (the delta 32 gene) that had a very important consequence. Many of the Plague survivors did so because they had a mutation that left them immune to the invasion of the Versinia pestis bacterium into the lymphocytes. The disease had no way of spreading throughout the body. Several hundred years later, this same delta 32 gene conferred resistance (and even immunity) to HIV AIDS, something of major significance. Those few people who could not contract AIDS were from the very genetic stock that survived the Plague and went on to produce offspring who were similarly immune to subsequent waves of the Plague and thence to AIDS. Sadly, the people of Africa (who were not caught up in the horrors of the Plague) ended up being particularly afflicted with AIDS in their communities.
