When a stage hypnotist mentions the lower eyelid as a "100% reliable" indicator, they are almost certainly referring to the Spiegel Eye Roll Test (specifically looking for the Sclera, or the white of the eye, visible below the iris). Here is exactly what they are looking for and why it matters: 1. The "Eye Roll" Sign The most common physical marker for "hypnotic capacity" is how much of the white of the eye (sclera) remains visible at the bottom of the eye while the person is looking up and closing their eyelids. - The Test: The hypnotist asks the audience to look up toward their eyebrows as high as they can, and while keeping their eyes up, slowly close their eyelids. - The Indicator: They are looking for people whose eyeballs stay rolled up even as the lids close. - The "Lower Eyelid" Clue: If you see a large amount of white space between the lower eyelid and the iris (the colored part) as the person looks up, it correlates with a high degree of "biological suggestibility." 2. The 0–4 Scale Stage hypnotists use a quick version of the Spiegel Scale (developed by Dr. Herbert Spiegel). They look for people at the high end: - Level 0–1: The eyes don't roll up much; you see mostly the iris. These people are "low suggestible" (unlikely to be picked for the stage). - Level 3–4: The eyes roll so far back that the iris almost disappears under the upper lid, leaving a large amount of white visible above the lower eyelid. These people are considered "high suggestible" or "natural somnambulists." 3. Why the Lower Eyelid? The lower eyelid serves as the "baseline." When a person looks up, the distance between the iris and the lower eyelid border is the easiest thing to measure visually from a distance. If that gap is wide, it indicates a high capacity for dissociation—the ability to detach from the immediate surroundings and focus purely on the hypnotist's voice. Other "Eye" Clues they look for: While the eye roll is the "reliable" biological test, hypnotists also scan the crowd for: - The "Thick" Lower Lid / Lag: People who have a slightly "droopy" or heavy lower eyelid often appear more relaxed or "trance-prone." - Fluttering: Rapid fluttering of the eyelids (including the lower lid muscles) when eyes are closed is a sign of an active imagination and immediate engagement with the suggestion. - Glazed Look: A lack of blinking and a "fixed" lower lid position suggests the person is already entering a natural state of focus. In short: If you are in the crowd and you roll your eyes so far back that the hypnotist sees nothing but the whites of your eyes above your lower lids, you are almost guaranteed to be invited up on stage!

Those two lines can be the Viking Scowl, used to protect the eyes from the low Northern Sun.

I've got that little crease in the middle, but it's not because I'm angry or depressed. It's because I worked outside in the sun for 30 years and I'm always squinting.

Imagine concluding that someone has anger issues, when in fact they’ve suffered years of pain. The arrogance and ignorance required to honestly believe one knows the intentions of another human being is astounding.

The anger muscle can cause the lines also due to stress and headaches consistently especially through the night & you wake up with those lines in the morning.
