Six Brand new DM class locomotives just offloaded at the Port of Timaru by Smiths Cranes and Construction, made their way north today and were quite the sight heading through Ashburton. Towed by an earlier arrival, seven in total! Built in Spain and capable of 120 Kph, the eventual fleet of 66 locomotives replace the aging fleet of DX locos which have half a century of service behind them. Kiwirail info. Additional footage; Cayleb Clayton Filmed 20 August 2026 between Rakaia and Rolleston, Canterbury, New Zealand. Cheers to the friendly locomotive crew.

A very quiet diesel. I think these will be the best diesel-electric locomotives that NZ has ever placed on the rails.
Incredible driver. Kept that thing straight as an arrow.
What a beautiful sight. Bring back rail travel, should never have been stopped. It’ll save our roads
Great capture of the new loco's. Just need to upgrade the horn's on the things, it's just not right!
Bloody awesome
NZ used to build it's own locomotives. This is a disaster.
Drone shots give fantastic perspective.
Kiwi rails new locos these things are tuff AF, big CAT V16 diesel, 4000hp 9260nm torque. Made by stradler trains. Swiss company, no ne gro's or ch inks design it. No asbestos, no CCP blackmail Manufactured is Spain factory. Cat engines made in Indiana USA.
I suspect 3 of the 7...or 4 of the 7 are facing opposite way around due to the paint schemes not matching. Now since they're all double cabbed it may not matter.....except I would like to see them all matched the same....so there!
Now we just need some freight to haul.
if the hornis anything to go by . . . . . . . .
I agree about the horns KiwiRail should replace them with 5 Nathan K5LA horns mounted on top of the longhood like the American locomotives
Great to see them before they get Tagged
First time seeing one of these locos in Blenheim today
Great drone shots. I agree with others below the horn is terrible, needs to be much louder and deeper. Some place names would be helpful to so we know where you were.
Stadjer trains are Swiss made other countries built them under licence
Wow..a two lane bridge.
Beautiful loco's, Love scenery🚂😍
Saw you guys twice
Not very good for the trade balance though. One wonders if NZ would have free access to the EU for its agricultural products? Thought not.
