Writer: Brett Stelmaszek Editor: Joshua Lambourne Stevenson Music by: @UFD-Music Maybe PS5s weren’t meant to survive this long. More and more reports keep dropping of these overheating and dying consoles that people picked up back during the heyday of the pandemic, and it’s all thanks to the liquid metal Sony chose to use to cool the thing. And it’s not just a bit of dehydration, but actual damage to the heatsink itself. With older generations, simple thermal paste would dry out and then you could go in and repaste it pretty easily, but the squishy gallium stuff is dangerous to electronics because it’s metal and that causes shorts. Sony’s changed a lot under the hoods of the PS5 since they first launched to help better deal with the cooling, including changing up the whole heatsink contact structure for the Pro model. Just know that maybe you might need to service yours soon if you’re seeing any weird behavior from it.

In other news, the PS1 I got in 1997 is still running strong.
My PS2 is still running like a champ, this is intentional sabotage
GALLIUM!?!? That stuff turns solid aluminium into chalk!
it's more then that, if there's ANY aluminum in the system, GALLIUM WILL BASICALLY EAT IT and make it flimsier then any type of paper
Meanwhile the PS3 I have:What tf is liquid metal?
Looks like the thermal paste got the “digital only” treatment ahead of schedule
I mean no one should be surprised. Corporations have openly admitted they put a life span on their products to continuously have consumers buy their products. They CAN create a product that lasts a long time or maybe even forever but that's just bad business.
Who decided to put gallium in the box full of metal…?
Wouldn't be surprised if Sony knew this would happen and did it on purpose
If an engineer used gallium, it was on purpose with the specific intent for it to damage any aluminum it touches. Excelent design to prevent tampering and promote programed obsolescence.
Meanwhile my 360 Slim and original 500gb black-brick XBone still running perfectly after 16 and 12 years respectively
Lmao i wasnt expecting Charlie
Even for those who aren't having issues right now, I'd still say it's better off to swap that liquid metal for some PTM 7950 before you start getting issues. Prevention is better than a cure.
Me chilling with my 7yo ps4
LTT warned of this a little while ago
Hm if only they could have designed them to last better and be easily reperiable... oh wait
gallium= a metal that turns other metals to flaky crust on contact
Ps5 running 5 hours a day since launch and 0 issues
OG Series X with the vapor chamber and unchanged thermal paste since 2021 is running strong
After buying an overpriced product and still facing these type of issue? We really miss older ceo of Sony interactive.
