If even companies are buying up old SATA storage tech because everything else is too expensive, you can dream of ultra fast networking all you want, you just cannot afford it in useful quantities. (And ultimately you need to store/read all the data that is exchanged via these insane speeds)

Another benefit of photonics on a chip is it is 50-99% more efficient. Up to 80% of transistors on a chip is not used because of heat (aka dark silicon).

It is fascinating to realize that PCIe Gen 6 is finally the generation where optical interconnects are becoming a reality.If you look back at the timeline, the original PCI Express 1.0 specification was already made for optical conections😮. That means it has taken 23 years of engineering, spec drafting, and industry evolution to finally transition this technology from copper to mainstream fiber optics! Talk about a long-overdue milestone.
I've been building computers for over a decade, for fun and for business. I think it's so fun and satisfying, but I get the feeling that personal computer building will be a dead hobby relatively soon.
My PC is still on PCIe 3.0 and I'm still doin alright.
