Steam Controller Drives Itself to the Charger

Credit: fossprime via IG Ray Foss built an open-source project that turns the Steam Controller's haptic vibration motors into a locomotion system - allowing the controller to navigate itself to its charging dock without any external motors, wheels, or robotic arms. An overhead camera tracks the controller's real-time position and orientation. Computer vision calculates the path to the magnetic charging puck. The software then fires precisely timed vibration pulses through the built-in haptic motors, which nudge the controller across the desk surface in the correct direction, adjusting continuously as it approaches and slowing before docking. The engineering insight here is using hardware designed for one purpose - tactile feedback - to do something it was never intended to do. Haptic motors create vibration. Vibration on a surface creates movement. Movement can be directed. That chain of logic is the entire project. It combines computer vision, browser-based hardware access, and timing precision to solve a robotics problem with parts that already existed in the device.
