for context This was in the 2022 DFL Supercup between Bayern and Leipzig where Bayern won 5-3. Late in the match, Alphonso Davies was down injured, so play was stopped. Before the restart, Leipzig had possession but, under football’s unwritten fair play convention, were expected to give the ball back to Bayern because Bayern had kicked it out due to the injury. Dani Olmo rolled the ball towards the touchline as if he was putting it out for a throw in. However, he left a tiny part of the ball over the line, meaning the ball was still in play. Under the Laws of the Game, the whole of the ball must cross the whole of the line to be out. Because the ball was technically still in play, Hernández had deliberately handled the ball, so the referee awarded RB Leipzig a direct free kick.
