Most modern diesels have shut-off valves at the intake, basically a throttle body, that cuts off air going into the engine when you kill the ignition.

Choke that air off as quickly and as best as you can

I'd just go into the highest gear

I have had that happen when the turbo went out. Yes, that is the proper way to stop it in a manual transmission.

A turbo or intake will just suck a jacket in and destroy itself, you need something like wood or something hard

This is why My Diesel is equiped with an Seal Valve at the Intake thats konectet to the ignition

And if those two options don't work RUN FAST SHE GONNA BLOW

K

Just drop it into the highest gear lol. "sharply"

That would be terrifying. Luckily we have things in place to stop it now. At least on more modern rigs

This is why I always drive a Manual

There is another scary feature associated more with two stroke diesels. They can, under the right (or wrong as this case is) conditions...start up backwards. The engine is now sucking the oil out of the engine - Drive gear now goes reverse and reverse goes forward. Destroys engines very quickly.

You can't exactly save the engine if you grenade the transmission so the only way is to suffocate it of air and even then it may not work again

Shit!!! That's some scary shit!!

Even the old Detroit diesels had an emergency air dam- a block off plate that snaps down and covers the internals but they were also super charged and had an unbelievable amount of sucking power so sometimes that wasn't enough. I had the generator in my fishing boat run away on me and had to stuff a co2 fire extinguisher down the intake. You aren't given much time to react when it happens and thousands of pounds of hot metal trying to self destruct is rather an intimidating thing to deal with if you aren't trained properly on how to deal with it

Yep had that happen going across a bridge thankfully no one in front of me and a hill climb after the bridge, still get the adrenaline going.

Stall the engine! Or wrap a t-shirt/jacket round the air intake, but that can be harder to achieve, and you have to be quick, or the engine will get damaged anyway. Fun times. Had this happen twice, I guess most people don't want to get too close to a runaway engine screaming, the noise is off putting.

We keep a custom built cap in the cab of our shop's 96 7.3 to put in the intake tube just in case.

It was fun to watch my van run away after the turbo failed. It roared for a few minutes with loads of smoke. New engine needed 😂

Take the fire extinguisher from under the driver seat and spray it into the intake
