If you ever get in a situation that requires you or someone else to pull on the emergency tabs, you probably shouldn’t be using that helmet again

The instruction that comes with the helmet literally says that you should not pull the emergency tabs bc it can break the pins, it's there for emergency services to be able to more easily remove your helmet without destroying it. Also if you put your fingers between the liner and the helmet it's really easy to pop the pins out

I mean, it doesn't matter if it's one off or reusable, if you ended up in a situation where someone need to pull the emergency release tab to get your head out of the helmet, means you crashed and bang your head hard enough to put yourself unconcious, so the helmet itself no longer can be use since the structural integrity already compromised after the crash

As a fireman and first aid rescuer in France, honestly, when I see the strength needed to pull these, I prefer the old method where one of us hold the helmet, the other one holds the neck and chin, then the first one slowly removes it. I think it’s too dangerous to pull too hard and make a wrong movement

It took me reading the comments to realize what that emergency release is for. I don't even know if my helmet is equipped with one. It never occurred to me that could be an option.

“and once we pull we can see… oh shit, fahhhh they won’t go back”

Trust me bruh, when you got into accident that require to pull that emergency thing, there's bigger concern than small tabs getting destroyed. For example, the totalled motorcycle and most likely the broken legs, but that's just a scratch.

Just don't pull it yourself, it doesn't really matter in an emergency that requires it because a helmet is supposed to protect you once and it's unsafe to use afterwards.

That seems like a lot of strong pulling for having it on someone with possible neck injuries.

While the actual mechanics might be OK for multi-use, if you're ever in the position where they need to be pulled, that helmet is a goner

If you're ever in a situation where you need to/have pulled the emergency release tabs, it generally means your crash was bad enough that getting a new helmet would be advised, because it means you have probably smacked the ground pretty hard

I pull it at least 1 a year..... For cleaning and washing the pads. As long as you pull gentlely, it's fine.

If you yank it out you can damage the clips. Pop it out carefully there's no issue. Same for the rest of the internals. It also allows you to clean it and put Comms in.

Paramedic here. Wouldn't use it. There is medical procedure to remove a helmet without head movement (very very important - do not move the patients head. If you are unsure leave the helmet on his head rather than jolting his head from side to side or back to front

the point is that if you need to pull them, you probably shouldn't be using the helmet again --- so the difficult reset and reattachment is to deterr people from reusing the helmet. Obviously people can pull on them when there isn't an emergency, and thus the helmet could still be usuable if all the pieces were reassembled correctly - which might be why they left a courtesy where you could potentially reattach the parts. Otherwise they might use simpler mechanisms to attach the pieces and be more unlikely to have a fix

The emergency release function is likely different from one manufacturer to the next. Probably best not to mislead people by making them think this applies to every helmet.
