The world does not give Australia the credit it is due for the brilliance that was the Group-A Nissan GT-R's. They made Godzilla the beast it became known as. Nismo owes a debt of gratitude to Gibson Racing for pioneering most of the racing modifications that became the Group-A dominant GT-R R32 that reigned supreme in the AJTC for several years.

The first time the Nissan Skylines started running at Bathurst, the HRT team really started to panic, then Jimmy Richards getting booed when he left the field far behind. After that, we all lost interest in Bathurst

Understatements breed myths that are later believed. No one banned the Nissan Skyline GT-R R32 from the ATCC; what's more, even four-wheel drive wasn't actually banned. From the 1993 season, the category switched to a new 5.0-liter V8 rulebook, and most Group A cars no longer met the requirements of the class. In addition to the Nissan Skyline GT-R R32, the list of cars no longer meeting the requirements from 1993 onward included: the Ford Mustang GT, Ford Sierra RS Cosworth, Ford Sierra RS500, BMW 635 CSi, Toyota Supra Turbo A, Toyota Celica Supra, Jaguar XJS, Rover SD1 Vitesse, Mitsubishi Starion, Maserati Biturbo, and Mercedes-Benz 190E (2.3-16 / Evolution). The Nissan GTR R32 wasn't "so good it was banned"—in fact, the ATCC redesigned the entire series structure. In 1993, the large capacity car class (over 2500cc) and the small/medium capacity car class (under 2500cc) ceased to exist, replaced by the 5.0 and 2.0 litre touring car classes.
