Well, to be fair, 'asking a simple question' can also be a manipulation strategy. If someone asks "are you pro abortion, yes or no?" they kind of funnel you towards the extremes. If you reply yes, they could frame that as "you think aborting a 9 month old fetus is okay", because that's what being pro abortion is about to them. Another example is "either we save the turtles, or the polar bears." If you reply with "why don't we save both", you're apparently too dumb to answer a question. Same goes for "will you lower taxes, yes or no?" If you answer "that depends on the situation, if there's a massive famine I definetly will, if the state is about to go bankrupt I won't" will make you look stupid.
