I had an honors class where we had to write an argumentative paper. There was a kid who seemed set to be valedictorian. He was bragging about how good the paper was, saying he was “moving like Shakespeare.” I read his paper the day before it was due and noticed that he used a bunch of advanced vocabulary without forming a single actually coherent idea that was based around the subject. When I pointed it out to him he said I was “covetous of his ameliorated lexicon.” He got somewhere around a 70% (I don’t remember exactly what it was). It cost him his spot as valedictorian. I got a 100% and my essay was used as an example of college-level writing by the teacher. Edit: For the record, the reason this cost him valedictorian is because his overall grade percentage average was about .3% ahead of the second place student
I know it is a show but when a teacher calls you down after class, it is not good. Praise is usually infront of everyone.

I remember a classmate would make sure their work was longer than the assignment because she thought it would give her extra credit. The teacher gave her a c. When asked why, the teacher told her "i said a short summary, not 4 pages"

I was a straight A student in high school English. My first college paper I received a C+. I was stunned, and after asking the professor about it, I learned that great grammar and vocabulary was only good enough to earn the +. The letter grade was wholly dependent on the content. It took me the entire class to break out of my bubble. My public school system did not prepare me properly for higher education.

The goal in writing is to effectively communicate. An advanced vocabulary is good to have, but if the average person can’t understand what you are saying you lost the primary goal of writing and it is essentially “crap”.

My teacher always told my class to "write like the person reading has no idea on the subject. Stay on point and explain simply." The more you add on, the more confusing it can get, and after a certain point, you just have nothing else to add
