Take, for example, manually adding distributed tracing to an application. You need to understand concepts including traces, spans, content propagation, and tags as well as configuration, processing and exporting. Automatic instrumentation abstracts all of this away, requiring only a couple of dependencies to be installed and some runtime parameters to be changed. In this talk, we’ll walk through instrumenting a Java application with OpenTelemetry using manual and automatic instrumentation. We’ll also explore the pros and cons of each approach and how they can be used together.
