Skinner’s Operant Conditioning: Rewards & Punishments

Education

Operant conditioning is a key concept in behavioral psychology that explains how behavior is shaped through reinforcement and punishment. In this video, we explore operant conditioning, including the work of B. F. Skinner and Edward L. Thorndike, and how consequences influence learning. You will learn the differences between positive and negative reinforcement, punishment, and extinction, as well as the ABC model of behavior. We also examine how reinforcement schedules affect decision-making and habit formation. Removing the leash after the dog goes to the bathroom is a very wrong visual. If the dog does not like the leash, removing it after the dog poops (as shown) reinforces the dog to go to the bathroom inside (also as shown). Additionally, we do not know if thedog sees the removal of the rug as a positive/punishment or just neutral and no association exists. Even though the explaination is theoretically correct, the example is not great.

I love the detail where Edward L. Thorndike is holding a cat to also represent his experiment.
