I'm a 46-yr old brotha, healthy, U.S.Army-retired, and living in the Philippines. I'm living like a king on a budget of $3,983.00 USD /mo. I'm single and thriving in Iloilo City Philippines. My 2-bedroom 42sqm condo only cost me 35K pesos/mo. I'm literally saving&collecting 100k pesos monthly. The only downside of this is that Filipinas don't prefer to date Black-Americans. So I've been here 15 months and not a single date yet. Their loss. My money keeps me company. I left USA late 2023. No regrets.

I have been visiting Thailand 12 times since 2006 and I have seen Thailand changes (in the good ways) every time I visit. The prices have been rising just like everywhere on the planet but it is still the very happy place to be. I love the people, good food, safety, culture, infrastructure and the climate. Thailand checked most boxes so I am moving to Thailand next year. Each individual has different reasons or preferences. We just have to get the right information for ourselves. Live where you feel comfortable and happy. Nobody can tell you where but yourself.

But I would say one thing - I have met many people who have come here, some even sold their homes to come here and it is those people who have ended up broke and left the country. Sometimes, having more money creates a false security and they overspend and don't click out of holiday mode early enough.
Great info! You're very poised and well spoken, I have a 5 year plan to live abroad but undecided about where. Right now the top contenders are Costa Rica, Thailand and possibly Mexico. I will be close to retirement at that time but not completely retired...I do have say this wave of Thailand videos have peaked my interest as it was never on my radar before. One thing for sure, I will keep my house in the US. Not selling... I will stay for 3 to six months at a time. I'm not over committing
For real! Hundreds all saying the same thing - I'm moving to ______! They have no idea what they're getting in to, and many are no where near prepared. I'm just glad you're the one speaking up. Whenever I've mentioned something sensible, I get branded as a gatekeeper. And yes I was doing some of that too. But most of those I spoke to have been here and gone - they weren't ready mentally or financially. That said, I wish good luck and better preparation for their future. Ok...back to the video!

As a nomad who’s been living abroad for years, I really appreciate how grounded this perspective is. A lot of content about moving abroad focuses on lifestyle fantasies. What often gets overlooked is that you still bring yourself with you. A new country won't fix what's unresolved, and often it presents a whole new set of challenges. The point about having a strong WHY is key. The initial awe may evolve, but what remains is everyday life. That’s when your reasons for moving really matter. Living abroad can be amazing, but I see it as a series of trade-offs. The people who tend to thrive are those who are purposeful, realistic, and adaptable, ready to pivot when things don’t go as planned. Glad YouTube brought you my way! The fact that anyone would leave America and not do research on permanently living overseas or abroad did not do any research... They are running from something in America. Those who need family around... definitely need not leave America....Basically the attitude in your home... don't bring it to Southeast Asia...
I currently live here in Japan, but I am here thru the US Government. I love this country, however, I always said I could never move to a country just on a tourist visa, or even a DTV. Having to do 'border runs' would never make me feel like I'm completely at home. Also, I have to be able to drive. I'm able to drive here in Japan. Having to rely on Grabs or the transit station would really make me feel limited, and boxed in. I'm a girl that likes to get lost wandering around stumbling upon hidden gems. It would only just feel like a really long vacation. Being forced to pack up and leave for a day, or a week to leave every 90 days, or 180 days just doesn't sit well. There may be times I won't feel like it, or maybe I'd like to invest that money I have to use to leave and come back. It's just too much. If I'm moving, I want to feel like I'm creating a new home base, not somewhere I have to be forced to leave 2 to 4 times a year. Also with the rules changing in certain countries to either slow down or stop tourists isn't very comforting either. Here in Japan, they recently passed a law for foreigners on a business visa. They used to only have to show proof of $30k in capital from their business. It has now been raised to $250,000. Applications went from maybe 1700 applications per month, to about 70 per month. So many businesses, mainly in the surrounding Tokyo area now have to go back to their native country. So as much as I love traveling abroad, I could never feel like anywhere outside of my native country is home. I also wish people would stop making videos about how cheap living is in Southeast Asia. Asia and their people give foreigners a beautiful experience, and different perspectives on life. To me, being able to wake up everyday being present, no stress, no hustle and grind mentality is priceless.
