How are the kids handling the move to Spain? One of the biggest concerns families have when moving abroad is how their children will handle such a huge life change. In this video, we sit down with our kids to hear their honest thoughts about life in Spain... although the interview doesn't exactly go according to plan! 😂 From making new friends and starting school to learning Spanish, discovering new foods, and adapting to life in Valencia, our kids share what they love, what they miss, and some unexpected things they've encountered along the way. After the interview, Alex and I have a deeper conversation about what it was really like telling our children we were moving overseas, how they adjusted to life in Spain, and whether our biggest fears as parents turned out to be true. If you're thinking about moving abroad with children, relocating to Spain, or starting a new life overseas as a family, we hope our experience helps you understand what the journey can really look like. 👉 Need help moving to Spain? I should probably keep my mouth shut because I don’t have kids. But I grew up binational, bilingual and bicultural. Mexican-born and raised. But in a half American household. I can tell you kids are super resilient and adaptable. I went to a bilingual school in Mexico and we got kids whose parents had relocated from the U.S. It literally took them months before they were fully bilingual. A year from now they won’t even remember the U.S. You need to do what you know is right for yourselves and for them. As you well said, they have no clue. So you need to make the decisions for them. They will figure it out eventually and be totally fine. Whoever is giving you shit, is just ignorant and stuck in their little bubble. You do you. It will all be good in the end.
My son was a Naval Aviator. He was assigned to a Roda Spain. Long story short he met and married a Spanish woman. They have 4 amazing intelligent boys.n they have lived in Spain, Italy, and now live in Norway. They all speak the different languages fluently and are so intelligent.
The kebab situation is interesting. As a Spaniard, I only learned recently that they're extremely rare in the US. Some Americans in Spain are convinced there's a huge untapped market for them in the states. 😁
Shocking...my kids also love pancakes...it must be your swedish genes awakening in your kids.
Este vídeo no lo doblastes al español.No se Ingles.
Harder for adults to adjust to new environment than young kids. Teens could be harder due to importance of friend groups they leave behind.
Tus hijos serán bilingües en poco tiempo, eso es maravilloso
Pretty much the same as last time when you interviewed the kids too, but nice you are doing well
Our house sold last week. We have a huge yard sale planned this week to sell all of our belongings and start the visa process. With our future being unknown, your videos always make me tear up while also giving me some hope that all will be well in the end. Thank you both!
Children are far more resilient and adaptable than parents think. Leaving America for another country where most are speaking a language they don't understand is a difficulty. Life is like that. Always and no matter where you are. But being forced to either learn the language or remain isolated, they'll learn that language. They'll learn more about how to figure things out, how to adapt, how to communicate, how to socialize in different cultures. Missing home will eventually be something they have to 'remember' rather than something they feel.
Sophie, what is your favorite food? Ben is trying to get her to say kebab. Long pause. I thought she was going to say something like, Food that floats in the pool during swim lessons. Sophie, do you like kebab? Objection! Coaching the witness. Projecting fear into the kids is something that happens with small children, so it is good to be aware of that. I must say that it also happens with adults. My 77 -year-old mother-in-law, who does not know how to call 112 for the ambulance, loves to remind her only child that moving to the US would be a disruption full of challenges. If you stay in Spain, she tells The Wife that we are no longer going to celebrate birthdays. If you want to leave, then leave. We are not invalids, she tells LaDama. Nika need to learn how to look at the camera. Would attaching some catnip to the lens help?
